Instead, it’s made from recycled plastic (that’s TOOU’s calling card and helps keep costs down despite its sleek, expensive-looking design). This guy doesn’t even have drawers – but we like how the open storage allows you to display your favorite reading and that the table even has space underneath to stash your slippers or hide an unsightly power strip. The Tomo is available in four colours, none of which is monotonous, and it comes in one piece, so no Ikea-like assembly is required. For around $100 you won’t find anything more sophisticated.

The best luxury bedside table: USM Haller P bedside table

For over 60 years, USM has been producing the Haller bedside table alongside its coveted modular collection of bedroom and office furniture. These six decades of production underscore the longevity of these products, both in terms of design and production, and they’re still one of the most popular storage options for designers’ heads. The chrome steel frame paired with one of the six available finishes makes this nightstand one of the most attractive. In fact, it’s such an acclaimed piece of furniture that it’s even part of the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. Oh, and those bottom drawer locks to keep your, uh, safe personal Items (e.g. sex toys) under lock and key.

The Best Acrylic Nightstand: Two-Way Side Table from the MoMA Design Store

Acrylic bedside tables feature a lightweight frame, durable construction and an overall easy-to-clean surface. So if you’re craving a contemporary acrylic bedside table, grab this one straight from the MoMA Design Store. The colorful side table, which comes in a variety of other equally bright color block options, is best suited to rooms that are on the larger side (thing is 18 inches wide), but we think it’s a quirky addition to any bedroom furniture.

The best wooden bedside table: article Falco

Good Good. You still want a wooden side table. Go at least a little more playful like Article’s elegantly designed Falco. Its geometric, sculpted base is a subtle homage to Isamu Noguchi’s school of sculptural furniture, albeit at a much lower price point. The article describes the Falco as a Scandinavian-style joint, although we’d be damned if we found something this good at an Ikea (which we swear will be our last dig at the Swedish meatball factory).

The best OG bedside table: Kartell Componibili

When you see a Kartell Componibili storage unit in someone’s home, you can bet they have solid taste – and that they’re a friend’s keeper. Like the USM collection, Kartell has been producing Anna Castelli Ferrieri’s Componibili for literally decades for their timeless design and endless functionality. Componibili does come in different sizes depending on how many drawers you want, but we opted for the humble three-drawer bedside model. Sliding open the doors almost feels like playing hide-and-seek with your own stuff, although we wish the circular handle was sealed so the entire drawer was completely covered when closed.

The Best Oversized Nightstand: Blu Dot Li’l Something Side Table

Blu Dot produces some A-1 tracks at its Minneapolis design studio, and its Li’l Something is more akin to A Lotta Something. The 17-inch wide bedside table is essentially a double-decker side table for twice the storage space. Listen, some assembly is required, but it will be worth it, especially for that little extra detail of the cable management system, because our engineering has be charged day and night).

Another great budget nightstand: Urban Outfitters Hugo

The Hugo side table is similar to the Componibili in its tower-like shape, but has two cut-outs for storing your personal belongings. It’s a more contemporary take on the average bedside table, but we think it’s exactly what most bedrooms need these days. Its slim shape also takes up very little space while still offering a decent amount of storage space.

If see-through styles are your absolute ideal and our MoMA selection is just a tad too big, West Elm makes a nightstand to compare. The only dig is that it’s only available in plain text (and it’s oddly expensive).

The Hawkins all-rustproof side table is “ahead of its time,” as the product description states. These curvaceous storage compartments are only really good for stashing a select few items – books, magazines, maybe a laptop and tablet – but we still think its overall shape will make for a curvy bedside companion.

Umbra’s Bellwood side table is part of its larger Bellwood collection, which features the same curved edges and wooden shelves. It’s not as visually interesting as the Falco, but there’s a lot more room to stash your belongings.

Wendall looks like a stool, but don’t sit on it for love of gravity. (It has a 44-pound weight capacity.) We like its modern design, and particularly its curved, oversized legs. It might be a little short for folks with taller beds, but other than that it’s a cute little accent piece.

Hem design furniture puts up-and-coming designers in the spotlight for their work. Designed by Karoline Fesser, The Hide is one of the brand’s most popular items and it’s easy to see why. Its simple design and ample storage space offer functionality, while its bright colors add maximum panache to any room. If you need something even taller, Hide is also available in a three-shelf option.

Copenhagen-based brand Muuto is owned by Herman Miller, hence the sleek lines and steep price. If you’ve got the cash to swing it, the Halves side table packs plenty of chunky functionality. The shelf is the perfect place to store books and can be angled away from visitors. It’s also made of acrylic stone, and if you zoom in close enough, you’ll notice its unique speckled texture.
