7 best new movies to stream this week on Netflix, HBO Max and more (August 22-26)

One of the very best movies of 2022 has taken the highway into the streaming zone, Top Gun: Maverick headlines in New Movies Available Online this week. While it’s not yet on Paramount Plus, those who wanted to watch the film at home (its extended theatrical run was proof that Tom Cruise is still a box-office king) finally have a solution.

Elsewhere in the streaming world, Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg have a road trip movie that aims to test the skills of these middle-aged men. Speaking of movies that might have you saying, “He still got it,” Sylvester Stallone is following Luke Wilson’s lead as the latest leading man to become a secret superhero. Except that this new film looks a lot darker than Wilson’s feel-good family romp.

The world of documentaries is also getting an important title to watch. HBO Max is debuting a film about Hurricane Katrina’s ongoing impact on the people of New Orleans that looks like a somber but important film.

Top Gun: Maverick

To be honest, I came to Top Gun: Maverick with an odd mix of expectations. I’m not a huge fan of the original (which, if you ask me, was flimsy), but word of mouth convinced me that Maverick was a very different experience. And 2 hours and 11 minutes into the movie I was convinced – to include Top Gun: Maverick in my personal top 4 movies of the year. So why does it deserve a spot alongside RRR and Everything Everywhere All At Once?

First and foremost: Top Gun: Maverick brings back the spectacle. The stunts and action in this movie stand above everything else out there and serves as a not-so-casual reminder that some movies are meant to be seen on the big screen. However, Maverick also brings strong drama as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) attempts to lead the next generation of TOPGUN cadets who are faced with a particularly impossible mission. This is complicated by the fact that one of those pilots is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Maverick’s late RIO Nick, aka “Goose”.

Katrina Babies (HBO Max)

Our country’s focus often shifts far too quickly from our greatest disasters to… well, less consequential. That’s the story of Katrina Babies, a new documentary debuting on HBO Max this week. It focuses on the people and communities of New Orleans that were irrevocably transformed after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Not only did people lose loved ones and watched their homes washed away, but they were also left with indelible mental trauma. Katrina Babies makes sure we don’t forget her stories.

Samaritan (Prime Video)

We didn’t expect Rocky Balboa to collide with one of the Euphoria kids himself, but here we are. The vigilante superhero known as Samaritan (Sylvester Stallone) is in hiding, basically working as a garbage man while the town he lives in is ablaze with crime and chaos. But maybe one person can bring Samaritan out of hiding when young Sam (Javon “Wanna” Walton, aka Euphoria’s Ashtray) discovers that his neighbor Mr. Smith bears a close resemblance to the missing superhero.

Me Time (Netflix)

You may love your family, but a break from their nonsense is always welcome, isn’t it? Well, that’s not the case with Sonny (Kevin Hart), who would rather take care of his kids than celebrate his old friend Huck’s (Mark Wahlberg) birthday. Luckily for Huck, Sonny’s wife (played by Regina Hall) demands that Sonny make some time for me.

Unfortunately for Sonny, Huck is definitely still a messy influence. The two get caught up in a strange version of Burning Man, and Sonny sees a lot more of Huck’s body than he expected. And Sonny is even being chased by a mountain lion.

Wolf (HBO Max)

Movies can sometimes teach us new terms, and so we find that wolf appears to have been brought to us by “clinical zoanthropy.” That’s because Jacob (George MacKay) is locked up in a mental asylum because he thinks he’s a wolf. And he’s not the only one with this condition. Cecile (Lily-Rose Depp) thinks he’s a wildcat, and they both think the asylum’s director, Dr. Man (Paddy Considine), for a zoo keeper. Bizarre and a little wacky, Wolf is for anyone who wants to howl at the moon.

Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby (Prime Video)

Lil Baby (not to be confused with DaBaby) is one of the biggest up and coming rappers of recent years. So we’re not surprised that Prime Video is giving Lil Baby (aka Dominique Jones) his own behind-the-scenes documentary. This special – which features interviews with staffers like Drake – includes everything from footage of Lil Baby as a young child to the history of his years in the drug trade. As a father, philanthropist, and racial justice activist, Baby represents the American Dream for some.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Finally, we have one more film that we admittedly missed in last week’s roundup – as its projected digital release wasn’t as hyped as it should have been.

So, for all of you who were too cautious to pay to see Jurassic World: Dominion in theaters, you can now watch the end of the Jurassic era (well, the cinematic one) come to an end. Anticipated because it’s Sam Neill and Laura Dern as Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Bringing Ellie Sattler back to the series Dominion tries to find some kind of closure. Can the combined forces of the remaining humans of the series help find a way for dinosaurs and humans to live in peace? Or is one side doomed?
