7 Wood vs. Hybrid: Which is Better?

The 7-wood has gained massive popularity in recent years. This popularity is particularly evident on tour, where some of the game’s best occasionally bag them. The 7-wood offers the pros plenty of distance with the crucial stopping power when approaching the greens from far down the hole. So if they’re good enough for the best in the world, why do so few amateur golfers use them? Here I am going to tell you the key differences between a 7-wood and a hybrid, how they perform in the real world, and which one might be best for your game.

7 wood

Most of the best fairway woods are available in 7 wood lofts and can be an incredibly useful club when you want distance and most importantly stopping power on a green. A 7wood often comes with a advertised 21° loft (the Ping G425 used in the video happens to be 20.5°), but it’s all about the dynamic loft that makes the 7wood so useful. With a much deeper and lower CG, the ball can launch much higher, hit a much higher tip height, and therefore achieve a much steeper angle of descent. As you can see in the chart below, the significantly higher tip height of the 7wood gives it much more stopping power on a green than a hybrid. This club can also come in handy off the tee when you want to hit a lay or number on the corner of a dogleg. However, keep in mind that this club produces a lot more backspin than a hybrid club and therefore has less rollout on the fairway.

Hybrid

We are all probably more familiar with the best hybrid racquets in the game, and this racquet’s popularity has skyrocketed over the last few decades. Compared to a fairway wood, the hybrid club has a significantly flatter club head with a forward center of gravity. Of course, hybrids also have a touch more draw bias, meaning they’re harder to shape in either direction than a 7-wood.

The most significant difference between a hybrid and fairway wood is how it interacts with the ball in the rough. A hybrid is far more versatile when the lie is less than ideal and the flatter head has better turf interaction than a 7-wood which is more likely to get caught in long grass. It’s a hybrid and you’ll find these clubs versatile and usable in pretty much every part of the golf course. From the tee, the hybrid club spins and launches slightly lower than a 7-wood, making it slightly longer for overall length once the ball has bounced and rolled.

If you hit a lot of greens from 180-200 yards (or how far you would hit a club from that loft), I think a 7-wood could be a very valuable investment in helping you hit more greens more often . A 7-wood is certainly not a club I would recommend regularly off a tee as it just turns too much – I would recommend a 3- or 5-wood if you’re struggling with your driver. While a 7wood is usable outside of the rough, it still can’t match the overall versatility of a hybrid from bad lies, and that’s also something to consider. There’s nothing wrong with not having both in your pocket!
