In 7500, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays an American pilot caught in a nightmare situation where hijackers are trying to take control of an airliner flying from Berlin to Paris. While trying to ensure no harm is done to the passengers and crew on board, the pilot begins to form a surprising connection with one of the hijackers. This unexpected twist could be the key to surviving the ordeal.

7500 packs all the growing excitement you’d expect given its central premise, but what really helps it take off is Joesph Gordon-Levitt’s central performance. The actor excels as a soft-spoken pilot trying to keep his cool in an almost impossible situation. The final act of 7500 is also really gripping as the suspense ramps up to an extremely high level.

Cyrano (2021)

Based on the timeless 19th-century play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, in this modern retelling, Peter Dinklage plays the eponymous role of a poet willing to help a young man win the heart of the beautiful Roxanne by telling Cyranos writing pretends to be his own . But there is a twist to this story, Cyrano himself is also madly in love with Roxanne.

Directed by Joe Wright, this musical drama is seriously romantic with a strong lead from Peter Dinklage at its core. Haley Bennett and Jelvin Harrison Jr. are also excellent in supporting roles and the direction is stunning. American Animals (2018)

Based on the remarkable true story of a 2004 robbery at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, American Animals focuses on a group of outcast youth who devise a plan to steal a rare first edition book and then turn it over to black people sell market. Of course, a foursome of high-spirited college students isn’t best equipped to pull off such a scheme, and things quickly unravel.

American Animals is so offbeat that it’s hard to believe it was inspired by real events, but the film also includes interview footage with the real people who inspired the characters in the film. It’s a novel idea by director Bart Layton and gives American Animals a unique feel compared to other heist films.

Saint Maud (2019)

Writer/director Rose Glass’s debut feature, Saint Maud, is a spiky psychological horror that will leave you chilling to the bones. In it, Morfydd Clark plays a devout hospice nurse who becomes obsessed with one of her patients, a former dancer with a terminal illness. Maud believes it is her duty to save the souls of everyone in her care, but what happens when someone doesn’t want to be saved?

Saint Maud is that rare film that will stay with you long after you’ve seen it, due in part to its shocking final scene, but also because the film skillfully blends horror and drama to create a movie that’s occasionally difficult to watch but gripping nonetheless is Weg durch. The lead role of Clark is particularly notable as she carries the weight of the entire film on her back with apparent ease.

If you enjoyed The Big Door Prize on Apple TV Plus and want more Chris O’Dowd, Juliet, Naked is what you’re looking for. In this rom-com, based on Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name, O’Dowd plays Duncan, a college teacher who is obsessed with a deceased American musician, much to the chagrin of his disaffected girlfriend Annie (Rose Byrne). But when said rock star comes to her small English town, Annie strikes a spark that drives Duncan insane with jealousy.

If you’re in the mood for something light-hearted, you should definitely check out Juliet, Naked. But don’t mistakenly think Juliet, Naked is disposable. It may have a breezy nature, but it’s still very relatable with some interesting things to say about growing older and finding something that makes you happy. Also, Ethan Hawke is an outstanding arrogant American rock star.

Vengeance is a mystery film that follows a New York-based metropolitan journalist (BJ Novak) who travels to Texas to investigate the mysterious death of a woman with whom he previously had a casual romantic affair in order to gather material for a new one get episode of his podcast.

Written and directed by Novak (who you might recognize as Ryan from The Office), Vengeance is a dark comedy with some serious cleverness. It probably won’t appeal to all tastes, but there are some interesting themes at play here, and Novak weaves together an intriguing mystery up to the last moment.

High-rise (2015)

This screen adaptation of JG Ballard’s 1975 novel of the same name has only become more concerning and relevant in recent years. The focus is on a high-rise apartment building that essentially functions as its own company, isolated from the outside world. But as the block’s carefully balanced infrastructure begins to crumble, tensions between residents bubble to the surface and the building threatens to descend into total chaos.

High Rise features a truly sparkling cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss, and better yet, they’re pretty much all on top form in this dystopian thriller. This was another box-office disappointment upon release, but its messages about class structure and our worrying reliance on convenience remain even more relevant in 2023.

The Neon Demon (2016)

There’s no denying that The Neon Demon will be the most polarizing movie on this list. What else would you expect from Nicolas Winding Refn? This surreal psychological horror focuses on an aspiring model (Elle Fanning) whose beauty and youth she elevates to the spotlight, but also inspires dangerous jealousy among her peers, who would do anything to reclaim the limelight.

The film received a mixed reception at launch (some critics loved it, others hated it), but if you like surreal films that place an emphasis on style rather than substance, you might find The Neon Demon enchanting. If you’re looking for a fairly conventional movie you might skip this one, but if you like your movies to be a little quirky then you should let Refn invite you into his bizarre world.
