It’s a unique time of year to play the tournament, but that’s because the original tournament was canceled after three days of competition due to COVID-19. The IIHF has decided to restart the annual event in August, and now, instead of taking a break from their regular season, these teenagers are tasked with playing some of their first ice hockey competitions in months.
“I think the challenge is getting the guys to play good, detailed playoff hockey,” US head coach Nate Leaman said before the game. “Usually for this tournament the guys are in the middle of their season so they are already prepared, they are in form. Your game contains much more detail. We have to get there. We have to get there quickly.”
The USA enters the game at World Juniors with 11 wins and one OT loss to Germany. The Americans are aiming for the seventh win in a row against the Germans.

In each game, we’ll highlight a Team USA player to follow during the matchup.
First up is Matt Knies, a forward from the University of Minnesota. He is a 2021 second-round draft pick from the Maple Leafs, who ran for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics, recording one goal and one assist in four games with the club.
He’s an experienced winger with a big body (6-3, 205) who constantly uses his frame to create space and distance from his opponents. The Golden Gopher would be one of the top forwards for Team USA in Edmonton.
