La Liga table 2022/23: Updated standings for title race, top 4, and relegation survival
Real Madrid begin defending their title with the start of the 2022/23 La Liga season.
Los Blancos topped the top spot with ease last season, winning 13 points ahead of rivals Barcelona. Financial woes aside, however, the Catalan giants have improved a lot this summer and will look to challenge a return to the top.
However, the La Liga season is about much more than just the title. Last season, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla each secured places in the Champions League, while Real Betis, Real Sociedad and Villarreal secured spots in the other European competitions.
At the other end, Cádiz, Mallorca and Getafe narrowly avoided relegation, while Granada, Levante and Alaves suffered relegation. In their place are Almeria, Real Valladolid and Girona to battle with the goal of retaining a place in the Spanish top flight.
Osasuna started the season with a home win against Sevilla and found themselves at the top at the weekend.

La Liga title race
Last season, Real Madrid were crowned La Liga champions and it wasn’t particularly close. Nobody challenged at all in the second half of the campaign and Los Blancos sauntered to victory.
This year, Barcelona are hoping for a bigger fight after only struggling to secure a top-four spot for a Champions League spot last season. Atletico Madrid will also be looking to be in the mix but staying with the two scoring Spanish giants will prove a challenge.

La Liga Champions League Places: Top 4 Chase
One of Europe’s top competitions, La Liga takes four straight places in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. The first two went to the traditional powers Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid held their own for most of last season to take third place in the Champions League, while Sevilla confirmed last place, falling short of rivals Real Betis in fifth place.
In 2022/23, Villarreal and Real Sociedad are expected to battle it out for third and fourth place, with Real Betis and Athletic Club also good enough to fight.

La Liga European Seats
In the Spanish first division season 2022/23, at least three more European places are up for grabs in addition to the four Champions League places.
Two places in the Europa League and one place in the Europa Conference League are up for grabs:
- Europa League (2 places): One goes automatically to the team ranked 5th in La Liga, the other to the winner of the Copa del Rey. However, if the Copa del Rey winner also finishes in the top 4, then the Europa League place allocated via the cup competition goes to the next highest place in the table that has not already qualified for the Europa League (usually 6th place).
- Conference League (1 berth): This goes to the team ranked 6th in La Liga. However, if the Copa del Rey spot has already gone to the team in 6th place, that spot will be passed on to the next highest ranked team in 7th place.
Furthermore, a team that wins the Champions League or Europa League would automatically secure a spot in the following season’s Champions League, regardless of table position. In the same way, a team that wins the Europa Conference League would earn a spot in next season’s Europa League.

LaLiga relegation
Each team hopes to avoid the dreaded bottom three and relegation from the lucrative Spanish top flight.
Last season, Cádiz, Mallorca and Getafe all escaped relegation by just one point. Granada and Levante put up a valiant battle but ultimately failed, while Deportivo Alaves went seven games without a win in the second half of the season and finished bottom.
