After a day off on Friday, Canada are back in action tonight as the host country take on the Czech Republic at 18:00 ET.

Canada beat Slovakia 11-1 on Thursday. It was Mason McTavish’s show as he set a Canadian junior world record with four goals in the game and added two assists.

Connor Bedard, Will Cuylle, Brennan Othmann, Logan Stankoven, Lukas Cormier and Joshua Roy also added multipoint games. Dylan Garand clinched the win on his debut at World Juniors 2022 as Canada improved to 2-0-0-0 in Group A – the only team to date to have two straight wins.

Czech Republic were on both sides of one-goal competitions early in their tournament. After beating Slovakia 5-4 in their opening game, the team suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat against Finland in their last game. Jan Mysak has led the Czech Republic with three goals and an assist in two games so far in the tournament.

Kent Johnson tracker

In each game, TSN will feature a Team Canada player who will be followed throughout the matchup.

For the game against the Czech Republic we will follow Kent Johnson. The Canadian assistant captain has only one assist in the tournament so far, but we’ve seen him use his hands on several occasions during World Juniors to create chances for himself and his teammates.

As the No. 5 overall pick in the 2021 Blue Jackets draft, Johnson’s skill with the puck at bat is what makes him so dangerous. Results are yet to come in this tournament in terms of points, but Johnson is sure to find the back of the net.

1st period

A few forced plays from Johnson early on, particularly on the five-minute power play. He attempted a few passes, which were picked off for showing pass for too long.

Speaking of passes, Johnson sent a really nice saucer pass to Tyson Foerster from the rush, which ripped a wrister at the net but no dice. He follows this up by finding Foerster again through the traffic in the opening, which hurls it to Stankoven at the back door, but he is robbed by Suchanek.

Yeah, so those hands of Johnson? On full display. He successfully completes Michigan’s goal by picking up the puck from behind the net and throwing it off Tomas Suchanek. Just a fantastic move by the Blue Jackets prospect.

End of 1st period: Canada 2, Czech Republic 1

18:55 — After a slow start, Canada was able to increase the pressure on the Czech Republic and the momentum is fully on their side. Czech Republic got through with the shorthanded goal, but Canada regrouped and sent Suchanek through. Without Suchanek it could easily be 4-1, 5-1.

18:47 — GATE! Holy Cow Kent Johnson. We have our first successful Michigan as Johnson collects the puck from behind the net and wraps it around and into the net. At that time he argued with the defender of the fallen Stankoven and hit Suchanek over the shoulder. An absolutely sick goal from the Blue Jackets prospect.

18:46 — This was an incredible time for Suchanek. This time he plugs Stankoven’s backdoor attempt. Johnson had found Foerster in the slot, who found Stankoven backdoor for the chance.

6:43 p.m. – GOAL! On their 20th shot of the period, Canada finally gets one from Suchanek. A shot from Jack Thompson on the spot deflects forward from Mason McTavish’s leg and gets past Suchanek. This is McTavish’s fifth goal of the tournament. Canada can equalize the game three minutes before the end of the first game.

18:42 — Oh my god, Tomas Suchanek. Kent Johnson was left all alone as he emerged from behind the net. Tyson Foerster spins and sends a no-look backhand pass to Johnson on the back door, but Suchanek makes an incredible save.

18:40 — Czech physicality has been the most effective so far. They don’t allow Canada to chip the puck and run around in the offensive zone. They step up and take the body and they’ve been very successful at that.

18:35 — What a shift in the first line for Canada. Multiple chances Connor Bedard, who gets a solid shot into the net from the top of the circle before collecting a loose puck up front and sending it through the night. Nothing goes past Suchanek as he was making the best game of the game so far when a pushed one-timer came all alone down the right to Olen Zellweger but Suchanek saved the glove.

18:31 — A big kill from the Czech Republic leading the way with the shorthanded goal. Six shots on goal from Canada but couldn’t get anything from Suchanek. A missed opportunity for a strong power play for Canada.

6:30 p.m. – Some good chances for Canada so far on the power play but nothing to do. Logan Stankoven had a couple of unique attempts, one he whistled and another was swallowed by Tomas Suchanek.

18:21 — GATE! It’s the Czech Republic who bat first as Martin Rysavy hits the back bar. It wasn’t announced on the ice, but the Czech bench was confident it would go in. Once the game was stopped it went to review and a goal was confirmed. An undermanned record allowed by Canada who had caught up with Ice and no one could come back to cover Rysavy who came on the rush with Jakub Kos.

18:19 — Chmelar’s night is over. It was confirmed to be a five-minute major and game misconduct. It’s not a good penalty and Canada are working on a power play early in the first.

18:16 — Canada will go the power play. After a great move in the Canada zone by the Czech Republic, the puck comes out of the zone and Jaroslav Chmelar hits Brennan Othmann from behind. A dangerous hit that cuts Othmann in the nose. The call on the ice is a five minute major to get in, but they will review the piece.

18:12 — You can tell right away that the Czech Republic is a far better opponent than Canada has been so far. They can play with speed, they’re fast with the puck and boy do they love to play physically.

17 o’clock – This is how Canada is positioning itself. No personnel changes from the Switzerland game but Brennan Othmann is in the front row with Mason McTavish and Connor Bedard, replacing Joshua Roy. After being scratched against Latvia, Othmann had a goal and two assists against Slovakia, and on the third occasion he featured alongside McTavish and Bedard.
