Eibar and Alavés start commanding in the SmartBank League

MADRID, 14 years ago. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Sociedad Deportiva Eibar and Deportivo Alavés rose to the provisional SmartBank League lead this Saturday after beating Tenerife and Leganés respectively on a day one in Mirandés, and Las Palmas failed to beat Sporting and Zaragoza at home.

In Ipurua, Gaizka Garitano’s students beat Tenerife (2-1) thanks to a hard-fought comeback that culminated in the final minutes. The three points were certified by the gunsmiths in the 86th minute with a penalty converted by Stoichkov after Fede Venancio equalized just after the start of the second half.

Tenerife, who reached the final play-off last season, had taken the lead in the 49th minute with a goal from Mo Dauda but were unable to resist pressure from the stands spurred on by the Basques in the latter part of the game. The win gives him the lead he shares with Alavés after his victory in Butarque.

Alavés stormed the south of Madrid (1-2) thanks to goals from Miguel de la Fuente, a former Pepinero, and Mamadou Sylla, who decided the match in the second half with a great shot from the cross. The former Girona striker’s goal canceled out the draw by young Naím García, who found happiness on the edge of the box.

The blue and whites went further and deserved better luck; They even equalized in stoppage time through Omeruo, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Imanol Idiákez’s showed their face and were close to a point, but they couldn’t stop the Babazorros, who were recently relegated to second place, from their fine debut.

In Anduva, Mirandés and Sporting de Gijón shared the points (1-1) in a game in which goals were scored in the first half hour. Raúl García de Haro put the Rojillos ahead in the 27th minute but José Gragera sealed the end just seven minutes after the locals scored. The point falls short of both.

In addition, Las Palmas and Zaragoza also parted in the game that ended Saturday’s program, a duel (0-0) that ended after midnight. The Canary Islands, with two clear chances from Jonathan Viera and another from Eric Curbelo in added time, were upset in the closing minutes with a missed penalty which VAR eventually corrected.
