How to Do Better In Your Business
As a business coach, I have helped thousands of business owners build their businesses for more than 25 years. And while there are many different ways to scale your business, it’s almost never about what the business owner deems necessary, which means more work. In fact, for the majority of business owners out there, the only way to increase the sustainability of their business is to do less work but do it better. That’s why today I want to give you some tips on how you can become better in your company.
better defined
Building a business should mean nothing more. More means more hours, more effort, more work, more stress, more anxiety, more struggle and more effort. Better means better sales, better profits, better lives for you and your employees. It means a better quality product for your customers. We don’t want more; we want better. The better by nature, the more without all the junk and extra work.
Your top 5
The first step to getting better at your business is to sit down and think of five areas where you want to get better at your business. If you’re like most business owners, you could probably think of a dozen or more things that you’d like to get better at. But I want you to stick with your top 5. Why five? Because if you go to your co-workers and say, oh, we have 9 things we want to work on, you’re going to be tempted to have 12. If you have 12, you will be tempted to work towards 16. If you have 16 things you want to do better, it might as well be 22. And then you have a huge mess and you won’t be able to concentrate on anything. So stick to five for this exercise. Focus on the elements that will have the greatest impact on your business and bottom line. We call these things your leverage points.
find the opportunity
Once you have your list of five, you want to find your top opportunity. The one thing that, if done better, could be a game changer for your business. Let’s say your biggest barrier to growth is marketing. You want to try a few experiments and see what resonates with your customer base. Once you find something that works, you can invest more resources, money, time and talent and scale your business. So this is your best chance to do better. Once you’ve narrowed that down, you want to create a plan for how you’re going to take advantage of this opportunity and find the growth in it.
Focus your time and attention
The last step to this exercise has to do with your time and attention. Over the course of the next month or quarter, set aside time each day to work on your top opportunity and the top five places you want to improve as a company. Encourage your leadership to do the same and work at it every day until you start to see progress.
