With the death of Allan Lyon in Bendigo on 14.

Allan was a brother to Peter, then the Bombers’ drought coach, and a hard-nosed, tough guy who knew no fear.

He joined the club with Peter in 1974 when the late Ron Auchettl was coaching the Bombers. Peter took over the coaching role the following year as the Bombers ended a 17-year drought when they beat Euroa for the GVL Premiership.

Ron Auchettl and Ian Burgess are the other deceased members of this site.

Peter said his brother was a quiet man who had been battling illness for around 18 months and was in an aged care facility at the time of his death.

“He was a great family man who never asked for or expected much in life,” said Peter.

Allan’s funeral was held in Bendigo on Monday.

Hope for the Morrison Medal

Herbert is averaging over 21 disposals per game and the tireless onballer has rarely failed to be one of Kyabram’s best in all his games this season.

And by winning two of the last three McNamara medals in the Kyabram District Football League while playing with Undera, he’s obviously getting noticed by the umpires.

Lamont reappointed to Cats

GVL club Mooroopna have reappointed John Lamont as manager for the 2023 season.

Assistant trainer Darren Ogier has also re-engaged in what is expected to remain the same as the cattery’s trainer committee.

Mooroopna is more than happy with Lamont’s three years at the club so far and his desire to create a culture and a competitive club respected by all of its players, fans and rivals.

The Cats haven’t played in a Finals since 2014, and whether or not they do so this season will depend in the final rounds this weekend when they need to beat hot favorite Echuca to earn a place in the Finals to back up.

Phillips’ Cheatley Medal

Lockington-Bamawm United’s Tyler Phillips has won the Cheatley Medal for Best and Fairest Player in the Heathcote District Football League.

Winning the medal for the second time in as many years, Phillips was a decisive winner with 34 votes, 15 ahead of the two runners-up, Heathcote’s Braden Patmore and North Bendigo’s Dylan Klemm.

Phillips had eight best on-site performances in 14 of the 16 games.

He is the first LBU medalist since Adrian Dohnt accepted the award in 2010.

Colbinabbin’s Jude Ryan took the U18 medal while the reserve medal went to Heathcote’s Liam Edwards.

Class A netball also produced a consecutive Esther Cheatley medalist in Brooke Bolton of Heathcote.

Ky recruitment coup

Kyabram Cricket Club have added another high-profile recruit to their ranks for the upcoming season.

Batsman wicketkeeper Jayden Tucker will join Tongala teammate Adam Nunn for the Cricket Shepparton season at the Redbacks.

Another former Tongala player, Darin Ohlsen, is already at the club.

The Tongala trio have moved on to playing at a higher level as Tongala withdrew their A-Grade team from the Goulburn Murray cricket competition last year.

Hay’s fifth year at Rovers

Picola Football League club Deniliquin Rovers have reappointed Alex Hay for his fifth year as manager.

Hay has risen through the Rovers ranks and is looking to continue to build on the current group of promising young players within his ranks.

Tongala’s Blitz Premiership

After winning just three games out of 12 in the regular season, Tongala officials didn’t have high hopes for the weekend’s lightning-fast Goulburn Murray Junior League Premiership title.

Competing in the second division of the 10-team competition, the Blues finished the lightning-fast Premier League unbeaten – much to the delight of all involved.

They feuded with Leitchville-Gunbower, one of the Echuca teams and two Moama teams and went undefeated in four games in the Victoria Park Round Robin.

They played against Echuca in the last game, the winner of that game took the title. Tongala won the game by two goals to two points in the 12 minute halves contest.

Hugo Monnich Vo has played pretty well in every game, while Cruz Kreymborg has scored seven goals for the carnival and his brother Jett has also been consistent in midfield.

Jack Forde was also among the best on defense, as was Phoenix Quinlan – who played his best game of the year.

Reunion in the golden era

This weekend marks a golden era for Kyabram Football Club.

The 1989 Bombers Reserve runners-up and the Premiership hat-trick winning teams from 1990-’91-’92 celebrate a 30-year milestone.

Mick Walsh was coach in 1990 and 1991 and Jamie Munro was in charge when he completed the hat-trick in 1992.

Walsh has indicated he will return and Munro could also attend.

Players, officials and supporters are urged to join the celebrations at Hurleys Hotel on Friday night for Kyabram’s must-win game against the Shepparton Swans on Saturday.

Just for the record, Kyabram scored 14.16-12.7 for Rochester in 1990, Shepparton United in 1991 (15.12-12.4) and Shepp United again in 1992 (7.5-3.6).
