First Golf Lottery Winner Enjoys A Round With Sporting Legends
The golf lottery first grand prize winner enjoyed an “absolutely amazing experience” after winning a round with two-time DP World Tour winner Jean van de Velde and soccer legend Robbie Fowler.
Pharmacist Jonathan Roberts won his seat in the Celebrity Series event at Formby Golf Club in Merseyside after his numbers were revealed in the golf lottery’s inaugural drawing in July. The 44-year-old, handicap 15, said: “It was an absolutely amazing experience, everyone couldn’t have been better. It was great to watch the likes of Jean van de Velde, but Robbie Fowler was fantastic. He played fantastic golf and you can see why he is such a good player.
“It wasn’t until about the fifth hole that my heart rate dropped below 130. It was nerve wracking but I loosened up on the back nine and felt like I had an OK round. Well worth spending £1 a week for this experience.”
Former Liverpool striker Fowler said: “The Golf Lottery is an opportunity for everyone to get involved. Jon has the opportunity to run with professional golfers and charities also make money from it and that’s the big thing. Basically, it’s about raising money for people who are less fortunate, and that’s what it should always be about.”
The Golf Lottery is a weekly draw that costs either £52 by direct debit or £5 per month. Prizes on offer include the ultimate Indian Ocean gaming experience including business class flights and 5 star hotel, a Legends Tour Pro-Am spot to compete with the likes of former England footballer Fowler, former England cricket captain Sir Andrew Strauss or Scottish rugby legend Gavin Hastings, a golf lesson with Major winner Michel Campbell, golf equipment and tickets and a weekly jackpot of £1,000.
Its primary goal is to raise funds for sports-related charities, with the goal of developing golf from the bottom up for underrepresented communities while supporting diversity and inclusivity. Charity partners include Alzheimer’s Society, The Golf Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK.
Keith Mitchell, Managing Director of the Golf Lottery, said: “The first draws have been a huge success and it’s great to see so many winners. Jon enjoyed a great day and we encourage everyone to sign up for the golf lottery and follow in his footsteps by winning one of many incredible prizes.”
