Speaking about the decision to contest the election, Bhutia explained that he sees this as the perfect opportunity to give back to the sport that has given him so much. The ex-India captain explained that given the bans, the sport needs reform in the country.
“Today I’ve only become what I’ve become because of football. I am therefore a Padmashri. I played for India for 16 years – this is my moment to give something back to my sport. It needs reforms with bans,” he told Bhutia in an interaction after submitting his nomination.
