What is the rating of Blonde?

Blond is rated with a rare NC-17 rating for some graphic sexual content. This classification means that only adult viewers over the age of 18 are allowed in the cinemas to see the film. An NC-17 label had to cause a stir. Fewer than 100 films have received the NC-17 rating since it was introduced separately from the X rating in 1990. Blond shows a graphic rape scene and a vaginal camera shot. Netflix was reluctant to release an NC-17 film as it wanted the content trimmed to reduce the rating to R, but director Dominik declined. Critics have questioned the controversial content Blond contains and what it is for to share an interpretation of Marilyn Monroe’s story. Both Dominik and leading lady Armas have defended the film’s content, calling it necessary, raw and real. Armas, in particular, has disagreed with the assessment.

Netflix has released the official trailer for Blond on July 28, 2022.

What did the creators say about blond?

The director of Blond, Andrew Dominik, counts this fresh film among the absolute favorites of his work. Despite controversies surrounding the NC-17 rating, the plot, and even the decision to cast Ana de Armas, he stands behind the film. He wrote Blond in 2008, and he’s dedicated himself to the story ever since.

Blond is a film for all the unloved children in the world,” Dominik said in an interview with Collider. “It’s like Citizen Kane and wild bull had a little daughter.”

Blond is not simply a film about Marilyn Monroe. It is also an exploration of childhood trauma, how it affects adult life and how this tragic combination unfolds in a person in the spotlight. Dominik goes on to explain how Blond doesn’t exactly tell a happy movie star story:

“And it’s a tragedy. It’s like an unwanted child who becomes the most wanted woman in the world and has to deal with all the desire that is aimed at her and how confusing that is. It’s kind of a nightmare. It’s about being in a car with no brakes. It just goes faster and faster and faster.”

The author of the source material, Joyce Carol Oates, commends Dominik for this Blond film adaptation. According to Collider’s article on her comments, Oates is quoted as describing him as “a very brilliant director” who “immersed himself” in Marilyn’s perspective, rather than offering a cheap male gaze objectifying a woman. Oates also approves the casting for the lead role, calling Ana de Armas a “wonderful actress.” Oates’ novel, also titled Blond, showed the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe by the film industry and how it so cruelly affected her life. Dominik’s film portrays this heartbreaking part of Monroe’s story, particularly in how powerful men take advantage of a girl with dreams.

What is the critical reception of Blond?

Collider’s review of Blond, written by Brian Formo, describes the film as “a powder keg of a movie; it’s beautiful, mesmerizing, contemptible, harrowing and extremely explosive” and a true cinematic adaptation of Joyce Carol Oate’s book. According to Formo, the film is a traumatic piece that portrays Marilyn Monroe as a desperate, hopeful dreamer who, while striving for fame, loses her down-to-earth, human identity as Norma Jeane. Furthermore, the abuse and rape of her beauty serve to chronicle her life. “It’s the most shocking body horror movie of the year,” Formo concludes Blond an A-.
