Wild weather played a big part at the 2022 edition of the Bathurst 1000 as Holden prepares to bid farewell to the Great Race.
An absolute downpour ensured that race officials canceled Saturday’s shoot-out due to the unsafe conditions. It ensured Cam Waters would start on pole after Friday’s first qualifying session.
As of Wednesday noon, the Bureau of Meteorology had forecast rain each day for the Bathurst 1000 race weekend, with 5-10mm forecast for Thursday, 15-25mm on Friday, 20-30mm on Saturday and 20-35mm on Sunday.
2017 winner David Reynolds called the predicted conditions “bleak” – but said they would increase his odds.
Reynolds’ victory alongside Luke Youlden came in soggy conditions, the last real wet race around Mount Panorama.
“I’ve found over the last year or two with this car (Grove Racing) that our car is pretty good in the wet,” Reynolds said.
“I want it to get wet. I think our chances increase when it rains.
“Things are looking pretty bleak for the weekend, which is playing into our hands.”

Holden says goodbye
Fifty-three years after a Holden car won its first race, the proud production car will make its final spin as the Commodore prepares to give way to the GM Camaro as the Gen3 era prepares to hit the front line.
It means it will be the last time Holden faces Ford at Mount Panorama. Say it’s not like that.
Defending Bathurst champions Chaz Mostert will be joined by new co-driver Fabian Coulthard for Walkinshaw Andretti United.
It will be the last WAU Bathurst 1000 to compete under the Holden banner before the famous former Holden Racing Team squad joins Ford in 2023.
Mostert is one of the favorites and the 28 cars starting on the grid – 19 Commodore, nine Ford – will be chasing Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen – the winner of Bathurst 2020 – who will again be joined by Garth Tander.

FULL-TIME DUOS? The Supercars star is calling for a major overhaul of the most hated Bathurst rule
Cameron Waters, meanwhile, is hoping he will get lucky the third time after finishing second in the last two Grace Races.
Will Davison is another in fine form who will be part of this week’s big four.
However, all the attention is on Holden, who won for the first time in 1969.
The great Peter Brock’s nine victories at Bathurst all came in a Holden.
