The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off on November 20th on TSN in Qatar, with Team Canada making their long-awaited return to the event after 36 years.

The 22nd quadrennial tournament begins with a match between Qatar and Ecuador, which runs until December 18th. It will be the first time the World Cup has been held in the Middle East and the second World Cup to be held entirely in Asia – the first being the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.

Although the tournament traditionally takes place in the summer, the intense heat of Qatar at this time of year has spawned another tournament for the first time: an Autumn World Cup.

Who won the 2018 FIFA World Cup?

France defeated Croatia 4-2 to win their second World Cup title at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The 2018 World Cup was held in Russia for the first time in Eastern Europe from June 14 to July 15, 2018. The host cities were Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sochi – which previously hosted the 2014 Olympics.

The French side reached the knockout rounds after beating Australia and Peru and drawing against Denmark in the group stage.

France later defeated Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium in the knockout stages before beating Croatia in the tournament finals with goals from France’s Mario Mandzukic, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe.

England striker Harry Kane received the Golden Boot (top scorer) for his six goals. Croatian Luka Modrić was awarded the Golden Ball (best player). Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois was awarded the Golden Glove (best goalkeeper) and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Mbappe received the FIFA Young Players Award.

The Spanish team was honored with the FIFA Fair Play Trophy.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup begins on Sunday 20th November 2022 with the FIFA World Cup trophy being awarded to the tournament winner on Sunday 18th December 2022 at Lusail Stadium.

There were five final applications from potential host countries: Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea and the United States. After much deliberation, Australia, Japan and South Korea were all eliminated. That left the final vote between the United States and Qatar.

When will Canada play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Canada returns to the World Cup for the first time since 1986. The tournament begins with each team participating in a three-game round-robin. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages.
