Playing as the legendary mascots of a hockey team in NHL 23 brings a certain amount of hilarity and charm to the otherwise stressful competition on the ice.

The ever-present attraction to a hockey team at any level NHL23 comes from the charm of their mascot, a costumed fan representative that players can control on the ice. Mascots offer a unique amusement, different from the high-intensity fights of professional athletes, and are intentionally silly alternatives that look absurd when played. However, mascots may not make the top 10 ranking NHL23but the hilarity of seeing Spartacat do a costumed coyote shoulder check more than makes up for it.

Every athlete there NHL23 has stats based on their overall rating that let players infer their strengths and weaknesses. Mascots are no different; equal category scores define their capability in a hockey game, albeit with far lower stats than any of the leading athletes present in the game. Players must unlock specific mascots as they progress and explore all of them NHL23the new features of before fully utilizing certain flagships. For example, the Nashville Predator’s mascot, The Gnash, begins a player’s list of eligible mascots. In order to unlock other mascots such as Carlton the Bear from the Toronto Mapleleafs or Gritty from the Philadelphia Flyers, players must progress through several modes NHL23 has to offer.

The best way to play as a mascot in NHL23 comes from “Three“game mode once players have unlocked a large number of different mascots. A short, three-minute competition forms the “Threes” mode, in which players must score as many goals as possible in that short time. Unfortunately, mascots aren’t the best goalkeeper in NHL23making this mode a flamboyant display of results that add to the hilarity of just mascots on the ice.

Available mascots won by the player are valid choices in “Threes”, sometimes showing up to ten different mascots on the ice at once. There are no faceoffs or penalties associated with this mode as the rink has been scaled down from its normal size. However, the limitations of the standard rules give this mascot mode a certain competitive edge with the ridiculous nature that emerges. Players can choose mascots from either the western or eastern conferences to create strange rivalries, but unfortunately mascots cannot fight NHL23 to escalate this hostility.
