How to pin links to the Taskbar or Start Menu of every browser
If you’re doing anything on your PC or any of the best Chromebooks, you won’t get far without opening a web browser. If you open certain websites regularly, it’s often useful to have a shortcut on your taskbar or start menu. Some browsers have a built-in feature that makes it easy, while other browsers require a complicated series of steps.
No matter what browser you use, this guide will show you how to pin your links where you want them.
How to pin links in Google Chrome
Google Chrome is the most popular browser on the market. While it can’t pin a link directly to the taskbar or start menu, it does have a built-in shortcuts feature that serves as a good starting point.
To create a Google Chrome link to the taskbar or start menu:
- press the three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the browser.
- Hover over it More tools.
- click create link.
- Name the shortcut and click Create.
- You can find the shortcut on your desktop. Right-click the shortcut to open the context menu.
- To pin the link to the taskbar, select Pin it to the taskbar.
- To pin the link to the Start menu, select On Home.
How to pin links in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge offers the easiest way to pin links to the Windows taskbar and Start menu. Follow these steps to pin your links:
- press the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner of the browser.
- Hover over it More tools.
- To pin the link to the taskbar, select Pin it to the taskbar.

How to pin links from Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave and other browsers
Unlike Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, these browsers do not have a built-in ability to create browser-specific shortcuts. However, it is possible to create shortcuts that open in your preferred browser.
To do this you need the following:
- The URL of the website you want to link to.
- The location where your preferred browser is installed.
In this example we use the URL for our website, https://www.androidpolice.com. You can replace the URL with any website you want.
To find the location where your browser is installed, right-click the browser shortcut and select Characteristics. The file location at target is the place you need.
The default install locations for each browser are as follows:
- fire fox: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
- Opera: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera\launcher.exe
- Vivaldi: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\vivaldi.exe
Once you have both the URL and the location of the file, follow the steps below:
- Right-click on the desktop.
- Hover over it New.
- Choose shortcut.
- Enter the file location and URL in the text box, separated by a space and enclosed in quotation marks.
- click Next.
- Name the shortcut whatever you want.
- click Finished.
You now have a shortcut to your website on your desktop. To pin it to the taskbar or start menu, follow these steps:
- Right-click the shortcut to open the context menu.
- To pin the link to the taskbar, select Pin it to the taskbar.
- To pin the link to the Start menu, select On Home.
These steps can also be used to pin a link using Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, but it’s easier to use the built-in features of those browsers.
How to pin links from Safari
Although Apple no longer offers a Windows version of the Safari browser, it’s still the default (and most popular) browser on all computers running macOS. Safari lets you pin a link to any website to the macOS Dock, which is roughly the macOS equivalent of the taskbar. You can do this by following these steps:
- Go to the page you want to pin to the Dock.
- Move the cursor via the address barand click and hold the URL.
- Drag the URL down to the dock at the bottom of the screen.
- Share the URL.
A link to the URL is pinned to the macOS Dock. Clicking on it opens the link in Safari.
