According to a report by IANS, Google is rolling out new policies for consumer accounts that will take effect from June 1 next year, and if you’ve been inactive in Gmail, Drive or Photos for two years, the company can delete the content of the product you are inactive.

Who will be affected

The new guidelines apply to consumer accounts that are either inactive or have exceeded their storage limit in Gmail, Drive (including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, and Jamboard files) and/or Photos to better align them with common practices across all Areas to adjust industry, the company said on Wednesday.

Multiple notifications

“If you’ve exceeded your storage limit for two years, Google may delete your content in Gmail, Drive and Photos,” the company said. The company said it will notify users multiple times before attempting to remove any content. “The easiest way to keep your account active is to regularly visit Gmail, Drive or Photos on the web or mobile while logged in and connected to the internet,” it added.

Notify a contact

Inactive Account Manager can help people manage specific content and notify a trusted contact when they stop using your Google Account for a specified period of time (between 3 and 18 months).

Update your plans

“If you need more than your free 15GB of storage, you can upgrade to a larger storage subscription with Google One. You can choose from plans starting at 100GB of storage, which also include additional member features like access to Google Experts or shared family plans and more,” the company said.

Select the three vertical dots in the top right corner, then click “Download” when you’ve made your decision. Google bundles all the images you choose so they can be saved.

In Google Photos, there is no option to download all your Google Photos at once. Instead, use Google Takeout for the fastest route to a full backup. It opens in a new tab. All user data, including Google Keep, email messages, and your Chrome history can be exported using the same tool.
