News Corp launches Insight Sport
News Corp Australia has launched Insight Sport, a women’s and gender-biased sports editorial series that takes a deeper dive into key issues from all of the codes that will appear in the company’s state and regional mastheads.
In its inaugural month, Insight Sport will publish a weekly digital and print edition along with online content across four themes; Body, Pride, Equality and the Power to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th with the 100 most influential people in Australian women’s sport.
A guest editor will serve as ambassador for each issue, with Australian Olympic champion Libby Trickett leading The Body Issue today.
Peter Blunden, News Corp Australia’s national editor-in-chief, said the company’s national sports network has committed to transforming its coverage of women’s and gender-biased sport to make it more visible and to address under-representation of some of the country’s biggest athletes.
“We have dedicated significantly more resources and time to reporting on women’s sport and now offer a regular presence across all of our platforms,” Blunden said.
“Last year, our sports content for women grew 54 percent across digital, social, video and print. With the launch of Insight Sport, we want to increase this even further. We will explore trending themes and extraordinary stories with some of the most influential figures in sport.”
Harvey Norman is Insight Sport’s launch support partner.
Emily Benammar, News Corp Australia’s Head of Digital Sport and co-founder of Insight Sport, said: “Through Insight Sport, we aim to create a bridge to connect athletes with their fans. We want to help break down taboos, raise standards across all codes from grassroots to elite, and most importantly, we want to engage athletes in telling their stories and engaging the big issues that matter to them.
“The hope is that Insight Sport can serve as a launch pad for women’s sport to become a pure sport and we don’t need a differentiator.”
Insight Sport’s inaugural month includes:
Week 1: The Body Issue – Body image, fat and muscle shaming, performance, recovery and mental struggles of elite athletes.
Week 2: The Pride Issue – Fight for recognition in all codes.
Week 3: The Equality Issue – How does sports tracking become equal play?
Week 4: The Power Issue – On International Women’s Day, a celebration of the 100 most influential people in women’s sport and a call for leading sport CEOs to commit to making important improvements over the next 12 months.
