LIV Golf: The latest player to ‘bolt’ from PGA Tour fired a warning to fellow pros

GolfMagic has previously documented any players who have changed their minds regarding the LIV Golf League.

If rumors about Brendan Steele come true, we may need to update our list.

Just a few weeks ago, Steele, a 39-year-old three-time PGA Tour winner, said he had “no interest” in participating in the Breakaway Tour.

Steele said he has no problem with players moving to LIV, but his message was clear: don’t expect to be allowed back.

Now, according to reports from ESPN, he will be one of three players Greg Norman et al. will connect.

Steele is set to join Danny Lee and world No. 34 Thomas Pieters as the latest signings, due to be announced on February 20.

Pieters in particular appears to have agreed to join LIV after being perplexed at not having been invited to play Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational.

As for Steele, the American previously told reporters on a conference call that he wasn’t interested, adding:

“I was not approached. I think the way it mostly worked is the guys would reach out and tell them they were interested.

“For me, I’m fine if guys want to leave… I think they just have to make the best decision for them. But don’t expect you to come back and play on our tour.”

Steele continued:

“I think there are people from all different angles. There are people who say, ‘If you want to go, that’s fine, just go and do their thing and don’t try to come back and play our tour or try anything like that.

“But there are other people who are really upset that this has happened. It’s divided the Tour and divided some of the best players in the world, so there’s all different points of view about how big the deal is or how upset people are.”

Steele began playing on the PGA Tour in 2011 and has three wins. Two of those came back-to-back at the Safeway Open and he also won the Valero Texas Open.

He has played and earned in nine PGA Tour events this season $350,609 in prize money. He was in the Riviera field but retired before the tournament.

LIV players are guaranteed to earn $120.000 for every 54 hole event they play. The winner takes home 4 million dollars. There are also team-based bonuses.

Dustin Johnson scooped more than 35 million dollars during the first LIV Golf Invitational Series. That was after signing for a report 150 million dollars.
