Section X & Section III action continues
(WWNY) – Sectionals resumed Wednesday in both basketball and hockey.
Top-seed General Brown hosted Oneida in a girls’ Class B, Section III basketball quarterfinals by Dexter.
– Kori Nichols discards 2 from the opening tip. General Brown is in the lead 2.
– Lady Lions Running: Ainsley Fuller with the bucket. General Brown extends his lead to 4.
– Away from turnover, Nichols is ahead of Fuller for the bucket. The Lady Lions are up front 6.
– Fuller stops and pops, yarn breaks. General Brown is still in the top 6. She had 16.
– Second Quarter: It’s Nichols driving the lane for the basket. It’s the Lady Lions at 12.
– Madelyn Ferris goes down heavily for the hoop.
General Brown advances to the Tier B semifinals with a 42-28 win over Oneida.
On the boys’ side, leaders Sackets Harbor hosted Oriskany in the Section III Class D Quarterfinals.
– First quarter: Austin Griner hits the swimmer in the paint. It’s the Patriots at 2.
– From the inbounds, Ethan Shi drills the 3 out of the corner. It’s Sackets Harbor at 3.
– A little later, it’s Shi from the wing for another 3-pointer. The Patriots are up to 6.
– Shi burns with his third 3-pointer of the quarter. It’s Sackets Harbor at 9.
– Griner splits the defenders and drops the shot. The Patriots are up to 8.
– Second Quarter: Marcus Castine discards 2 from turnover.
– Sackets Harbor advances and beats Oriskany 53-50
It was the Bulldogs’ battle as Chateaugay and Heuvelton met in a girls’ Section X Class D basketball semifinals.
– From the opening tap, eighth grader Madison McComb gets the first shot. Kaelyn Morgan sets up the rebound. It’s 2-0 Chateaugay.
– After a missed 3, McComb gets the putback and increases the lead to 5.
– Class 8 classmate Irelynn LaPlante steals and falls in 2. It’s 7-0 Chateaugay.
– Heuvelton comes on the board during a free throw from Allison Trathen.
– As the defense falls back, LaPlante sinks a 14-footer.
– Lakin Martin to Rylin McAllister for the corner 3, ripping yarn.
– LaPlante for the open 3.
Chateaugay led all the way, beating Heuvelton 41-30.
It was Hermon-DeKalb against the top seed and number one state ranked Hammond in the other Class D girls semifinals.
– Zoey Cunningham goes to the layup. It’s 2-0 to Hammond.
– Oliver Simser turns inside and falls in 2 to tie the game. She scored 15.
– Landree Kenyon on the rebound with the bucket. It’s 8-6 Hammond.
– Hailee Manning invades for 2.
– Jayla O’Donnell with the inner sweater. The demons are within 4.
– Kenyon splits defense for 2 of their powerful 31 points.
– Kenyon to Ava Howie on fast break layup.
Hammond beats Hermon-DeKalb 56 to 32.
Canton was in Potsdam for a boys’ Section X Division I ice hockey semifinal.
-First period: Tyler Berkman’s Ryan Rutley, waves forward, pins the puck home. It is 1-0 Potsdam.
– At the start of the second period, Berkman feeds the cross-ice to Cooper Grant’s stick to score the goal. It’s 2-0 Sandstoners.
– Above the blue line, Rutley’s shot bounces off the glass between the goaltender’s skates. John Duffy buries it to 3-0.
Canton would score three goals in the third period to level the game, but Tyler Berkman netted with just 24 seconds remaining.
Potsdam went through 5-4 and returned to the Division I Finals for the first time in eight years.
