Curling Clinic sees curlers hurry hard to try the sport – SwiftCurrentOnline.com

It was a full house at Swift Current Curling Club yesterday as people got acquainted with rocks, brooms and slides.

People of all ages took the opportunity to try the sport under the guidance of club members. They went on the sheets in a large group and practiced how to step and slide safely on the ice, all the swing, dash and curling skills used in the sport.

The “Curling Clinic” served not only as an opportunity to learn how to curl, but also as an opportunity for members to improve their teaching skills.

Aryn Thibault, a Junior Ice Technician at Swift Current Curling Club, had a blast showing the assembled beginners the ropes.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Thibault. “It’s always a fun time to get out here. It’s just nice to disconnect from everything else in life, and it’s just a fun way to do it.”

With the curling clinics, which take place twice a year on this scale, the aim is to get people excited about the sport. You can experience what the game has to offer with friends and family, or come in and meet people who share the same interests. Curling as a sport can be easy to learn if you have someone to play on a team with.

For Thibault, these open sessions are a great way to attract new members to the club.

“It’s not a huge city here, so it’s difficult to get people here,” Thibault said. “But today, with all the people we had, it was a lot of fun. Helping kids learn what you’ve been learning for several years and just watching them improve over time is really cool.”

For the smaller children who participate, some as young as four, parents rejoice when they take an interest in something that can become a lifelong passion.

Dalyn Schwab brought her six-year-old and four-year-old to the event and had a blast watching her kids play curling.

“They absolutely loved it,” Schwab said. “My four-year-old did well until the donut break, then she kind of blew it. My six-year-old kept up and did really well. I was very impressed.”

Schwab says she plans to bring the kids back on Sundays so they can continue to enjoy the sport.
