Manchester United aren’t in the Premier League this weekend, but there’s one notable (if vague) update that’ll have you worried Marcus Rasfordwho seemed to get out of the way in the Red Devils’ 2-1 win over Barcelona last night.
“I don’t know [if Rashford will be fit for Sunday’s EFL Cup final]. Now players come in [to Carrington]we need to do investigations, medical [checks]. Immediately after a game you can’t say you have to wait for the doctor [checks].” – Erik ten Hag on Marcus Rashford
IMPORTANT UPDATES FROM FRIDAY
FRIDAY PRESS CONFERENCE HOURS
LIVERPOOL
Thiago Alcantara (Hips), Luis Diaz (knees) and Calvin Ramsay (knees) remain on the sidelines Joe Gomez may have joined them on the injury list after picking up what appeared to be a hamstring injury midweek. However, there was no word about Gomez in Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match presser.
Ibrahima Konat (Muscle) was back in training this week but Klopp urged caution with the defender given his limited time on the pitch after a month.
“Ibou is near but [only] had two sessions with us after a long injury.” – Jürgen Klopp
Klopp was asked if he could make any changes following Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat by Real Madrid and the Liverpool boss hinted at some rotation this weekend but once again preached patience for players recovering from injury have returned.
“We’re not sure all the guys would be able to play at all after Madrid because of a few knocks here and there. We’re really not 100% sure so we need to make changes and we’re going to make changes anyway.
“But it’s not like you come back from a long injury and it just clicks again. We now have the situation with Bobby and Diogo. You can see that with Virgil too. Everyone always expects Virgil, kind of like a robot…he played most games last year, played every game at the World Cup, came back, got injured, come back, play, play, play, so that’s the situation. It’s not perfect, but we have to get through it” – Jürgen Klopp
There was more talk of rotation when Klopp was asked if it was “tough” for the newly fit again Diogo Jota And Bobby Firmino re-enter the starting XI based on the current form of the front three.
“It’s not hard, we have too many games to make it hard! We can’t always play with exactly the same thing [players]. There was a time when Sadio, Mo and Bobby were very young, maybe they played a lot of games, but even then we needed [to make changes].
“That’s good. The goals against Newcastle in particular were real team goals where they played together, that helped. But we have to change something, we can’t change that. But every minute that they can play together, all the lads, is of course very helpful because it improves understanding. You could see that at the goals.” – Jürgen Klopp
MANCHESTER CITY
Pep Guardiola was unusually helpful in Friday’s press on the team news front when he said so Kevin De Bruyne (illness) was just a ‘maybe’ for the trip to Bournemouth and all but out of the question Aymeric Laporte (disease) and John Steine (paralyze).
“We have training this afternoon, I think Kevin is training again today. I don’t believe. John may partially do it [training].
“We’ll see later, Kevin maybe. I don’t think so about the other two.” – Pep Guardiola
ARSENAL
Thomas Partey (Muscle) has missed the last two Premier League games but Mikel Arteta is optimistic he will be available for Matchweek 25 should today’s training session go well.
“Not many changes. Questionmark [is] on Thomas. He hasn’t trained much but it looks like he might be available so let’s see how he trains today.
“He’s a very important player for us, who we’ve missed in the last few games. Hopefully he can be available.” – Mikel Arteta on Team News
Mohammed Elneny (Knee) stays out for a long time and continues to defy the update Gabriel Jesus‘ is positive, a Gameweek 25 appearance still looks like a big challenge.
“He’s making really good progress. He’s doing more and more on the field and he’s not reacting [negatively], so that’s really positive. We want to have him as soon as possible, but we also respect the time frame that we have been given by the doctors and specialists. He’s really pushing the envelope right now.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus
CRYSTAL PALACE
Wilfried Zah (hamstring) could be back for tomorrow’s game against Liverpool and the Eagles are waiting to examine the winger after today’s final training session to see if there is any reaction to his injury.
Tyrick Mitchell also looks like he’s recovering quickly after limping away last weekend during Nathan Ferguson got playing time with the U21s this week as he brings us his recovery from a series of injuries.
Sam Johnstone will be out for a few weeks due to calf problems.
LEEDS UNITED
Javi Gracia gave little on the team news in Friday’s press.
“There are some injured players, you know that better than I do. I have a lot of information that some players have been injured for a long time and to be honest I prefer not to talk about injuries like that at the moment.” – Javi Gracia
Rodrigo Moreno (Ankle), Adam Forshaw (hip) and Stuart Dallas (knees) are still out while it remains to be seen if Markus Roca (Muscle) is closer to competing after being ruled a ‘touch and go’ for the trip to Everton – a match he ultimately missed.
Archie Grey (ankle) and Luis Sinisterra (Muscle) have all been on the sidelines lately but shouldn’t be too far away Max Woeber (Shoulder) was examined after suffering an ugly injury last weekend.
Pascal Struijk was due back for that clash at Goodison Park after observing concussion log but complained of “fog” in a training session on Friday and missed it.
southampton
Tino Livramento (Knee), Juan Larios (muscle) and Che Adams (unspecified) are omitted Mislav Orsic has joined them on the sidelines after suffering a concussion mid-week.
Mohammed Salisu is back in training and everyone else is fit.
“We don’t have Che Adams, Tino Livramento and Juan Larios in the squad due to injuries. We have Mislav Orsic with a concussion a few days ago, so that will take him out of the squad. That was it mostly, we had Salisu back in training this week.” – Ruben Sells
