2022 Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic nets $60,000 for area schools
From personnel reports
The final tally for the 2022 Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic Basketball Tournament has been filed, and each of the eight participating high schools has received checks for $5,000 from goal proceeds. This year, in addition to the entrance fee, each school received an additional check for $2,500 from Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and its Sports Matter program. As a result, each participating school received a total of $7,500 for their athletics programs.
For 35 years, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic has been known across the region as the premier high school basketball tournament during the holidays. The Hickory Metro Sports Commission acts as the hosting organization for the event and distributes entry fees among participating schools.
Participating high schools include Alexander Central, Bunker Hill, Fred T. Foard, Hickory, Maiden, Newton-Conover, South Caldwell and St. Stephens. Financially it was a great event for all eight schools off the pitch. On the court, Hickory won the boys’ championship and Alexander Central won the girls’ championship while over 3,500 fans enjoyed three exciting days of high school basketball.
