Constance Marten and Mark Gordon have been charged with involuntary manslaughter after the remains of a baby were found in a wooded area.
Prosecutors said the aristocrat and her partner were also accused of concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice.
The remains of an infant were found in Sussex on Wednesday after a major two-day search.
Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, were arrested by Sussex Police on the outskirts of Brighton on Monday night after a search lasting more than seven weeks.
On Thursday, the Metropolitan Police said it was “too early” to give a specific date of death, adding that the child had been dead “several weeks”.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of the Metropolitan Police said: “At this point we have not been able to confirm the baby’s sex and a post-mortem has not yet taken place.
“Nonetheless, based on our investigations to date, we believe the baby may have been dead for some time before it was found.”
The couple are due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Local residents living near a wooded area between Brentwood Crescent, Hutton Road and Burstead Close said they noticed a heavy police presence around the time officials said remains were found on Wednesday.
Julia, 83, whose house overlooks the forest, said: “I had dinner and my granddaughter said they found the baby.
“I looked out the window and said, ‘They must have found the baby in the back. They had forensics in tents outside, there were half a dozen people and there were two white tents.
