Jurgen Klopp hails “very special” Mo Salah after latest record-breaking goal – Liverpool FC
Liverpool’s new all-time Premier League goalscorer Mohamed Salah admits it’s a milestone he’s been chasing since arriving at the club in 2017.
The Egypt international’s two goals in the 7-0 loss to arch-rivals Manchester United were his 128th and 129th in the top flight for the club, and his second – sixth of the game – surpassed Robbie Fowler’s Premier League record.
“It’s very special, I can’t lie. That record has been on my mind since I came here,” Salah, who earlier in the week became just the second Liverpool man after Ian Rush to score 20 goals in his sixth straight season, told Sky Sports.
“I think after my first season (when he won the Golden Boot with a remarkable 32 league goals) I was always chasing that record.
“Beating United today with that result is unbelievable.”
Manager Jurgen Klopp has long ceased to be amazed by Salah’s exploits on the pitch, but even he had to single him out after that game.
“Mo Salah achieved something very, very special tonight – let’s not forget that just because we’re used to him scoring a lot of goals,” said the Reds manager.
“A very special, very special boy and he should be really proud of that.”
While Salah’s performance added to the long list of achievements he has achieved at the club, a fourth win in five games – and a fifth straight clean sheet – left the team with a game in hand and on three points fourth-placed Tottenham Spurs still come after Anfield.
That was more important for Klopp, whose side are gaining momentum at a time when their rivals have fallen into fickle form for a place in the top four, with this season’s signings Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo both also scoring two goals, with Roberto Firmino leaving the bench to score his first goal since November from injury.
“A freak result, a real top performance. The way we started the game was really special, the best in a long, long, long, long, long time. We were super energetic,” he added.
“In a way, I think everyone saw how good the guys can be.
“I loved the performance, I loved the three points and the result is good too, but I don’t carry that around with me.
“We saw what a positive result can do for the boys. We were 7-0 up, someone played a ball to Luke Shaw, back pass, and we were chasing him with four players, and then you’re like, ‘What are we doing here?’
“How much adrenaline it gives you and how much positivity it gives you.”
