A big weekend of Labour Day sporting carnivals
Over three thousand participants will be in action at three major porting carnivals this Labor Day weekend.
Warrnambool hosts the Life Saving Victoria Junior Championships, Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Open and Warrnambool Seaside Volleyball Tournament this weekend.
Warrnambool Mayor Debbie Arnott thanked the many volunteers who worked hard to make these events possible.
“This is such an important weekend for Warrnambool and a big thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put together these fantastic events,” she said.
“We have many sporting events, many visitors and I urge everyone to make the most of it and enjoy our beautiful city.”
Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club Events Coordinator Al Aulsebrook said everyone was happy to come to Warrnambool to compete.
“We have 1000 pincers converging on the foreshore. This is the tenth consecutive year that we have hosted a state event,” he said.
“They enjoy the fact that the city has all the facilities. There are many accommodation options, there are many food options, we have the caravan park right here next to the competition arena.
“It has good support from the city council, which is great. This event could not take place without the efforts of City Council staff in preparing the beach.
“A well-prepared beach is key to a successful surf lifesaving event. For 10 years in a row the council staff have come, worked tirelessly and once again it is in pristine condition.”
Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club President Kim Tobin said it had been the biggest weekend of the year for the club.
“This is our biggest event for the year and we have 900 players attending the event over three days,” she said.
“Most of these players travel so it’s a huge economic benefit for Warrnambool over the weekend as many families come and stay and spend their money in Warrnambool.”
Warrnambool Volleyball Association President Tanya Hughes said they’ve seen an increase in numbers this year.
“We have a record 90 teams, so that’s a pretty big increase for us,” she said.
“We had to find another seat, so we’re actually playing in four different stadiums.
“There will be well over 900 players. Everyone loves coming to Warrnambool.”
If you’re planning to visit the Foreshore this weekend, consider parking and walking down Cannon Hill or Flagstaff Hill as the area will be buzzing with activity.
