The tearing down of tricolor planes at India’s High Commission in London by pro-Khalistan protesters has infuriated people at home, with calls for the toughest measures to be taken against those responsible. A group of Khalistan supporters waved separatist flags and chanted pro-Khalistani slogans as they grabbed India’s national flag that flies over the mission in London on Sunday, prompting an arrest in connection with the violent disorder.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the incident and said the UK government must take strictest action against those responsible.

“This is absolutely disgraceful, unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms. Strict action must be taken by UK police and their government against those guilty of disrespecting our tricolor and committing trespassers,” she tweeted.

Congressman Rajeev Shukla tweeted: “Highly reprehensible incident. The guilty must be arrested by the British police.”

Mission officials said the “attempted but failed” attack had been thwarted and the tricolor was now flying “more magnificently,” PTI reported.

Scotland Yard said it was called into reports of disorder on Sunday afternoon and that a man had been arrested while the investigation continues.

“There were no reports of injuries, but windows were broken in the High Commission building,” the Metropolitan Police statement said.

“Officials were there. The majority of those present had dispersed before the police arrived. An investigation was launched and a man was arrested a short time later in the vicinity on suspicion of a violent disturbance. The investigation is ongoing,” the statement said.

The Foreign Office in New Delhi, meanwhile, has urged the UK’s most senior diplomat to stage a protest after multiple videos on social media showed a Sikh man pulling down the flag outside the Indian Mission in London. UK Deputy High Commissioner Christina Scott was “reminded of the UK Government’s fundamental obligations under the Vienna Convention in this regard,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
