Mexico’s WBC history: Has Mexico ever won a World Baseball Classic championship?
The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico both entered the 2023 World Baseball Classic with championship expectations. Mexico has outlived both.
Mexico have already beaten Puerto Rico and the United States in this year’s tournament, putting the team just two steps away from a title. Joey Meneses and Randy Arozarena have been dominant in key wins and are quickly making this team one of the best in the world in international baseball.
To get where they want to go, Mexico must endure two more powerhouses, including a semifinal match against Japan.

Did Mexico win the World Baseball Classic?
Mexico has never won the World Baseball Classic. Although the event is relatively new as it started in 2006 and this is only its fifth edition, the Mexico national team has achieved unprecedented success in this tournament.
Japan won the World Baseball Classic in both 2006 and 2009. The Dominican Republic joined the board with a championship in 2013, and the United States won their first World Baseball Classic in 2017.
Mexico would be the fourth diverse team to win the event if they prevail in 2023.

The Dominican Republic failed to make it past the group stage of this year’s tournament, but it’s possible Mexico will have to face two former champions to clinch the title. Mexico meets Japan in the semifinals and will get either the USA or Cuba in the final if they progress.
When was the last time Mexico reached the finals of the World Baseball Classic?
Mexico has never played in the finals of the World Baseball Classic. In fact, Mexico had never reached the semifinals before this year. The team was eliminated prior to the championship portion of the tournament in each of its four trips to the World Baseball Classic prior to 2023.

Mexico didn’t make it to the championship portion of the tournament in 2006 and 2009, but the team made it to the second round of the group stage.
After the format changed in 2013, Mexico were eliminated in consecutive tournaments after the group stage.
Mexico went 3-1 into Pool C to open this year’s World Baseball Classic. The team overcame an early loss to Colombia by notching wins over the United States, Great Britain and Canada. Mexico defeated Puerto Rico 5-4 in the quarterfinals to make history for the national team and advance to a semifinal match against Japan.
