Sydney Sweeney’s Latest Fashion Collaboration Is Inspired by Her First Love: Vintage Cars

The sought-after woman speaks about her love of vintage across all facets of life, from the garage to the red carpet.

After finding fame as the captivating Cassie in Euphoria in the summer of 2019, Sydney Sweeney was undoubtedly on her way to becoming a Hollywood “it” girl. But when the pandemic brought film sets to a halt, her next steps were interrupted – leading to her now-famous TikTok account @Syds_Garage.

The then 23-year-old actress decided to buy an original 1969 Ford Bronco with the intention of restoring it herself with all the free time she suddenly had. She detailed her experiences working on the car at the dealership on TikTok, which led to her account gaining 1.5 million followers and a number of partnerships, including her most recent with Ford Motor Company.

“I can express different versions of myself through different characters and the red carpets and the fashion moments,” she says, “but I couldn’t show my roots. That’s how I am with a lot of people.”

Classic cars were Sweeney’s first love. (As a little girl, she dreamed of owning a Ford Bronco.) Well, that translates into a broader passion for beloved objects that carries over into her red carpet style.

“I always love paying homage to the beautiful pieces that were made before me,” says Sweeney. “Recycling and reusing fashion is super important because we’re in an industry that’s constantly coming out with new pieces and I want to make sure I’m trying to do my best to be conscious.”

With the help of stylist Molly Dickson, the star actor delved into the archives of Thierry Mugler and Versace. However, Sweeney’s favorite vintage look hasn’t happened yet.

“I’m really, really excited — it’s a color I’ve never worn before and it’s a piece I was really lucky to be able to get my hands on,” she teases. Sweeney says we can expect to see the look before the end of the year: “Just hold on. You’ll know what I’m talking about when it comes out.”

For fashion inspiration, Sweeney looks back to Brigitte Bardot and Blake Lively. Of the latter, she says: “I thought they were so beautiful and always had the greatest selection of fashion, but I didn’t grow up with them [to] or knowledge of fashion [in Spokane, Washington]so I’d just be like, ‘Oh, that’s the coolest jumpsuit I’ve ever seen.'”

As Sweeney has become more immersed in the world of fashion through work, she’s had a few opportunities to slip into the designer seat as well. Earlier this month, she released a swimwear collab featuring Frankie’s bikinis. Now she’s releasing a workwear collection in collaboration with Ford, made by Dickies – and it’s actually been influenced by her history of reupholstering and remodeling.

“On the original Ford Bronco, it was just a metal door, no storage in the vehicle — there’s no room for a phone, purse, wallet or anything — so I designed a leather trim that had a pocket and a little bit of clasp,” says Sweeney “There’s a lot of style, but also function, that I wanted to have in these pieces.”

She was inspired by the overalls she wore every day in the workshop to work on her car. Since the auto restoration field is typically male-dominated, she wanted to bring a level of inclusion to these pieces.

“I want to turn it on its head, make it fun, and make it a way of expressing myself,” she says. “Hopefully others can express themselves too.”
