At least five dead, more than 80,000 without power amid latest California storms

At least five people have died and more than 80,000 people are without power after the recent storms that have hit California.

The New York Times reported that officials from different parts of the state have confirmed at least five people were killed in the storm, which is only the latest in a string of systems that have battered the state with heavy rain and snow and strong, damaging winds have .

The Contra Costa Fire Protection District, serving a county near San Francisco, tweeted On Tuesday, a large tree fell on a car while it was traveling down a road, killing a passenger and slightly injuring the driver.

A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol told the Times that another man died Tuesday after a tree fell on his car in San Mateo County, south of the city.

The Times reported that two more people were killed and three others injured by falling trees in the San Francisco area.

A homeless man also reportedly died after a tree fell on his tent at Lake Merritt.

More than 80,000 customers were left without power in the wake of the storm as of Wednesday night, according to power-tracking website PowerOutage.us. A majority of the outages occur in Alameda and San Mateo counties.

Two tornadoes have been confirmed in the Los Angeles area in the past two days.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that a weak, narrow tornado made brief landfall at an RV park in the town of Carpinteria on Tuesday evening.

The tornado had an estimated maximum wind speed of 75 miles per hour and damaged about 25 RVs. It also caused minor tree damage in the cemetery across from the RV site.

The NWS also said a tornado put on in the town of Montebello on Wednesday morning. The agency has not yet issued an assessment of the tornado’s strength as it is still reviewing the damage caused.

ABC’s Los Angeles affiliate ABC7 reported that the second tornado injured at least one person and ripped off roofs from several buildings. The outlet received some footage of the cyclone.

The series of storms has caused several deaths and damaged property for months, while leaving some stranded in their homes. But they’ve been of great help to the state with its water woes, as nearly two-thirds of California has stayed out of a drought because of last week’s rainfall.
