‘Do something’ trends on Twitter after latest US school shooting
The phrase “do something” trended on Twitter with 198,000 posts after the Nashville school shooting killed three children and three adults.
The suspect, a 28-year-old woman believed to be a former Covenant School student, was shot dead by police Monday morning.
“How many more children have to be murdered before congressional Republicans stand up and act? … We have to do something,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said On Monday.
Marcus Flowers, challenger to Georgia Democrat and Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote, “As America mourns another school shooting, this time in Nashville, Marjorie Taylor Greene tries to stop the ATF from doing its job. Common sense gun legislation is required. We must do something to protect our children.”
“Breaking our hearts – again. The pain of the families of those killed in Nashville today, like the pain of tens of thousands of families a year in America, calls for action. It’s high time we did something about gun violence,” Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg said tweeted.
Democratic MP Ted Lieu wrote, “Another school mass shooting in America, this time in Nashville. Will House Republicans do anything? Yes, @GopJudiciary is holding a committee markup tomorrow to make it easier to convert pistols to short-barreled rifles through the use of a pistol mount. Outrageous”.
“How many more children must die in a school shooting before Republican politicians have the courage to do something about assault weapons?” former Home and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro called.
The suspect in the Nashville school shooting is a 28-year-old woman from the city, police said. She is said to have been a former student at the school.
She is said to have used two assault rifles and a handgun. The suspect, who died after being attacked by police, has yet to be identified.
Three adults and three children were killed in the shooting.
Only one officer was injured by broken glass. Two officers from a five-man team located the suspect and shot her dead, police said.
Police were called to the scene at 10:13 a.m. local time and the suspect was shot 14 minutes later at 10:27 a.m.
Mr Aaron told the press that police were walking through the first floor when they heard gunfire from above.
“They immediately went to the shooting,” Mr Aaron told the press, adding that the suspect entered the school through a side entrance and went to the second floor and “fired several shots”.
The confrontation between officers and the suspect then took place on the second floor in a “lobby-like area”.
An FBI investigation found that men were behind 98 percent of all active-shooter incidents in 2021, and that out of 250 active-shooter incidents between 2000 and 2018, nine involved women.
Filming took place at the Covenant School; The Presbyterian institution has around 200 students from preschool through sixth grade.
President Joe Biden said Monday, “I want to commend the police who “were quick to respond within minutes… We are monitoring the situation very closely… and we need to do more to stop gun violence. It’s tearing our communities apart… and we need to do more to protect our schools lest they be turned into prisons.”
“Therefore, I am again asking Congress to pass my ban on assault weapons. It’s time we made more progress,” he added.
