Top Gear’s Paddy McGuinness says Freddie Flintoff warned him about Question of Sport role

top gear Presenter Paddy McGuinness has revealed he has been warned question of sport by Freddie Flintoff when he took on the role.

The star has headlined the long-running BBC sports quiz series since 2021 and recalled speaking to his colleague top gear Moderator about possible online backlash.

“I remember Freddie, when I got the job, he called me and said, ‘Oh God, be careful,'” McGuinness said monday mile podcast. “We talked about how to talk about it online and stuff.

“He said he was filling in on a sports breakfast show […] for a month and he said the abuse he got. He said, ‘I’m an ex-athlete, Ashes and all, and even I’ve been abused!’” he added, hinting that exercise can make people “a little bit militant”.

McGuinness also spoke about the online backlash to his joining top gearremembers: “I had nothing to do with the show. I was never there as a guest, nothing at all. I knew it was causing a lot of friction on Twitter and so much, but listen, what isn’t?”

Last week it was confirmed that series 34 of top gear canceled filming after Flintoff was involved in an accident in December.

“In these circumstances, we believe it is inappropriate to resume production of Series 34,” the BBC said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize to Freddie and will continue to support him in his recovery.

“We understand that [halting the show] will be disappointing for the fans but it’s the right thing to do and we will make a judgment later this year on how best to proceed.”
