Commonwealth preaches diversity, women empowerment in sport
Historically, the Commonwealth has embraced diversity in carrying out the work at hand.
This year’s main message for Commonwealth Day (March 14, 2023) was loudly repeated; Promoting diversity and empowering women athletes to reach their full potential.
In Uganda, the main celebrations began with a sports gala at the Kyadondo Rugby Ground.
These culminated in a meet-and-greet event at the residence of British High Commissioner to Uganda Kate Airey in Nakasero, Kampala city.
Female sports icons such as Ritah Asiimwe (para badminton player), Anna Harriet Anzoa (para table tennis player), Asina Kabendera (basketball and netball player) and Teddy Nakimuli (boxer) were part of the guest list at the Welcome, Wine and Dine party.
Other high-profile guests included the Diplomatic Corps, Commissioner for Physical Education and Sport Rev. Canon Duncans Mugumya, officials from the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) and National Council of Sports (NCS), sports federations and federation leaders, other sports personalities and media personalities.
As we celebrate Commonwealth Day in Uganda, we highlight women athletes in the country to celebrate their achievements and the importance of gender equality in sport, and Commonwealth values support sporting success.
