Arsenal vs Chelsea score, result, highlights as Gunners retake Premier League top spot with Chelsea win
Arsenal have eased back to the top of the Premier League table with a ruthless 3-1 win at home to London rivals Chelsea.
On the back of seeing Manchester City wrestle control of the title race last week, Mikel Arteta’s hosts produced a superb first-half showing against the struggling Blues, to take a two-point lead at the summit, though Man City have two games in hand.
Captain Martin Odegaard’s superbly taken double sealed a perfect start for the home side before Gabriel Jesus’ close-range finish made it 3-0 at the break.
Noni Madueke pounced on a rare slip from Arsenal, to prod home a consolation goal for Frank Lampard’s visitors, but the Blues stretched their losing streak to six games under the former England international.

Odegaard produces Emirates masterclass
Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard called on the team to ‘reset’ against Chelsea, on the back of four Premier League games without a win, and the title momentum switching to City.
The Norwegian struggled to make an impact in last week’s 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium, but he was the shining light, as Arsenal returned to form. His 13th and 14th Premier League goals of the season underlined his importance in Arteta’s team as the former Real Madrid star ensured Arsenal will not limp away in the face of City’s onslaught.
“We came out and showed a different spirit to last time (against City)”, he said. “Everyone was hurt after the City game. We used that anger and disappointment to get back on track in this game.
“You can lose games, but the way we lost, we didn’t play our game, and weren’t ourselves, that was the most painful thing,” he continued. “We have to fight and keep going. We believe and will fight until the end.”
Arteta vows to fight on in Premier League title race
Odegaard’s message will have Arsenal fans still believing they can catch City, and Arteta echoed his captain’s rousing message at full time.
“For the first 60 minutes, I thought the team played really well. We needed to be us again, and that was everything I want to see from our team,” Arteta said. “The crowd have been incredibly supportive of what we have done and we wanted to earn the right to be top of the league. We are, and we’re happy to be back there.
“Now we wait and see, as it’s not in our hands.”
Arsenal resilience in this match shows they are ready to fight City all the way in run-in, despite the defending champions having two games in hand. Pep Guardiola’s City side face three successive matches against teams battling relegation, starting with West Ham, before hosting Leeds United and travelling to Everton.
Aubameyang pick shows Lampard’s lack of Chelsea plan
For all of the relief felt by Arsenal, there was more misery for Lampard and Chelsea, as they slipped to a sixth successive loss under the former Blues legend.
Despite boasting a squad that includes two record-breaking transfer windows worth of talent, the stark lack of cohesion and quality is weighing heavy on Lampard.
Following defeat to Brentford at the weekend, the former midfielder tweaked his team, to be more attacking, with the surprise inclusion of former Gunners star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at forward. But the Gabonese international was hauled off by Lampard at halftime, after managing just NINE touches of the ball, in an anonymous return to the Emirates.
Lampard’s decision to inexplicably start the veteran striker, with no plan, and then substitute him, was a microcosm of the issues at Stamford Bridge.
No direction, no motivation and no sense of how or why things have lurched from a struggling campaign, to a third head coach in last than 12 months, and likely bottom half finish.
“We were too nice to play against in all aspects in the first half. In the second half we played more like a team that had a threat up top”, he said after the match. “But, in the first half we were too easy to play against.”

Lampard has not shied away from the issues surrounding Chelsea’s recent poor form, with the former England international yet to pick up a point since his return, but he insisted the only way out of the situation is keep plugging away.
“Our job is to look at the performances and mentality in training to try and bring back a good feeling. That only comes with hard work”, he said.

“You can’t always control the results, but you can work every day.”
1 hr and 45 mins from kickoff: Arteta: Arsenal want more than just top four in 2022/23 run-in
Mikel Arteta is delighted with his side proving their doubters wrong, to clinch a Champions League qualification spot, but the Spanish boss insists everyone at the club is pushing for more in the final weeks of 2022/23.
“Not a lot of people were optimistic that we would be able to reach the Champions League”, he said.
“What I like most is that even after achieving that with six games to go, something that has not happened in more than a decade at this club, we are still not satisfied. We’re still upset and we want more.
“If we want to be the club that we want to be, consistently up there with the best, that’s the mentality we need. That’s what I have loved most the last few days.
“We have achieved what it’s difficult to do, and we can still achieve the Premier League title.
“There are five games to go and a lot of things are going to happen still. This is Arsenal Football Club. We have to be here to win every single trophy.”
