Who can Newcastle draw in Champions League 2023/24?

Newcastle have secured their place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2002/03 season.

The Magpies snatched the one point they needed to secure a place in the top four as they drew 0-0 with relegated Leicester City on 22 May.

Their last European adventure ended a decade ago, meaning a return to elite European club competition will not be easy for Eddie Howe’s side.

Sporting News take a look at the teams Newcastle could face in the Champions League group stage.

Which pot will Newcastle end up in in the Champions League draw?

Newcastle are likely to be drawn into a difficult group in the Champions League.

The Magpies have not competed in European competition since 2013, meaning their current UEFA coefficient is zero. That would put them in the fourth pot of the draw, with Celtic currently the only other team in that pot.

A club’s coefficient is calculated based on its record in the last five seasons in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. Man City currently have the highest coefficient on the continent, followed by Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Who can Newcastle draw in the 2023/24 Champions League?

Pot one of the Champions League draw includes the current titleholders, Europa League winners and champions from the top six European leagues based on coefficients.

Manchester City, Barcelona and Napoli have all confirmed their place in the first pot as champions of their respective leagues. Newcastle don’t meet City in the group stage as two teams from the same nation can only meet in the knockout stages of the competition.

Real Madrid have secured their place in the second pot and are likely to be joined by Atletico Madrid, Juventus and possibly Bayern Munich if they finish runners-up in the Bundesliga.

Pot three could feature the likes of Serie A’s Lazio and Shakhtar, meaning Newcastle could face a tough task.
