Galway GAA’s Gearoid McInerney: Sporting family background, age and break from hurling
Gearoid McInerney has developed into one of Galway’s strongest hurlers in recent years.
The GAA star was instrumental in the team’s success, but he almost didn’t play hurling.
After missing out on a minor panel spot, Gearoid lost interest in the sport, but luckily got his momentum back.

Here’s everything you need to know about Gearoid McInerney and his life on and off the field.
Old
The hurler was born in September 1990, making him 32 years old. He was born and raised in Oranmore, County Galway.
Flinging father
It’s no surprise that Gearoid is talented as he comes from a strong athletic background. His father, Gerry McInerney, was a Galway player and won consecutive All-Ireland medals in 1987 and 1988.
Break from skidding
After failing to make the minor panel, Gearoid took a brief break from hurling, unsure if he would continue.
He told Off The Ball last year, “I played a little bit of minor and didn’t make it into the minor panel.”
“That completely put a damper on my interest in it for a while — for like a year or two.”
“Then, after a while, I got a taste for playing for my club again. I felt like I would just try again.”
“I was quite competitive, so I did a lot of sport back then. I think there were five of me playing so it was easy to take whatever time you choose.”
“I played rugby at school, I think I even played badminton.”
Amazing Career
Gearoid first played competitive hurling while attending school at Oranmore Boys National School, where he won two county titles in hurling and football.
He made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty when he was selected for the Galway Intermediate Team. He then joined the Galway U21 team and won an All Ireland medal in 2011.
Gearoid made his senior debut in the league in 2014 and after several seasons became a regular in the starting XI. He has since won a Leinster medal and a National Hurling League medal. On September 3, 2017, Galway won their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 29 years, with Gearoid starting at central defender.
relationship status
Gearoid has never publicly admitted that he has a partner and keeps his personal life very private and out of the spotlight. He does not have a strong presence on social media and has been very guarded about his family or potential relationships in all interviews with the press.
