Is Sporting KC Ready to Bounce Back? Can they turn around the season?
You’ve no doubt heard the oft-quoted adage, “Better late than never,” and that mantra certainly applies when it comes to Sporting Kansas City’s performance this season. With a meltdown earlier in the season and the Sporting office poised to sack head coach Peter Vermes, things have, well, calmed down A bit in the sense that this squad isn’t exactly that abominable. The question of the day: are Sporting KC ready to bounce back?
A big win against the Vancouver Whitecaps could help Sporting turn the tide.
Every time an MLS team records a 3-0 clean sheet, it’s cause for celebration for the team, and Sporting Kansas City is no different in that regard. Stopping the Vancouver Whitecaps during their four game unbeaten streak is an achievement and something Sporting must build on. In fact, Sporting KC are harboring hopes of making the MLS Cup playoffs this fall, and with 12 games left in the regular season, their record is 6-10-6, putting them in 10th place in the Western Conference – only one A single point from the playoff contest.
Is Sporting KC ready to bounce back?
The big win against a strong Vancouver side could be a signal that Sporting Kansas City are about to end their season and move up the Western Conference table. With three goals in 20 minutes from Remi Walter, Alan Pulido and Erik Thommy, Sporting KC may have finally gotten back to the attacking style that has largely failed this season.
In terms of attacking stats, Alan Pulido is finally back on form and leads the team with eight goals and Erik Thommy has three more (along with five assists, leading the team).
We welcome back an old team friend.
Another positive sign for Sporting Kansas City is the re-signing of veteran Chile midfielder Felipe Gutierrez for the remainder of the 2023 season with an option to continue his contract next year. Gutierrez was the designated player for Sporting from 2018 to 2020 and recorded 19 goals and nine assists during his time with Sporting. Gutierrez brings a wealth of experience and was a bit of a globetrotter himself, having played in multiple leagues in South America, Europe, the Middle East and of course MLS.
