Christine Sinclair missed a penalty and a chance to make World Cup history as Olympic champions Canada drew 0-0 with Nigeria on Friday.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie secured a valuable point for Nigeria and left Group B wide open when she saved Sinclair’s penalty in the 50th minute at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Sinclair wants to become the first player to score in six World Cups.
It means both teams remain behind Group B leaders Australia after Steph Catley’s penalty handed the co-hosts a narrow win over the Republic of Ireland on the opening day. New Zealand celebrated their first World Cup win at the 16th attempt when Hannah Wilkinson’s goal shocked group favorites Norway at a packed Eden Park.
On day two, Switzerland meet World Cup debutants Philippines before Spain meet Costa Rica in the opening Group C game.

FULL TIME! Women’s World Cup: Switzerland – Philippines 2-0
It’s an opening win at the Women’s World Cup for Switzerland, as they beat the Philippines 2-0 to top Group A.
A Ramona Bachmann penalty in the first half, the fourth missed in as many games at the tournament so far, set the Swiss on their way before Seraina Piubel added the three points after the break.
The Philippines were competitive in their World Cup debut and thought they had taken the lead, but Katrina Guillou’s finish was disallowed due to the offside flag.
Next, Switzerland meets Norway, while the Philippines meet hosts New Zealand. The Football Ferns defeated Norway in their opening game yesterday in what was their first ever win at a World Cup.

GOAL! Women’s World Cup: Switzerland – Philippines 2-0
Switzerland doubles its lead! Full-back Geraldine Reuteler flies over the left flank and gets to the baseline. She saves the ball and meets Crnogorcevic, whose shot is saved from six yards. Sow is unable to get the rebound into goal, but Seraina Piubel eventually parries it, slamming it past Olivia Davies-McDaniel and putting Switzerland in the lead.

Women’s World Cup: England captain Millie Bright ready to go
England captain Millie Bright is fit for tomorrow’s opening game against Haiti, Sarina Wiegman has confirmed.
The centre-back has not played a full game since March following knee surgery but has made a full recovery in time for England’s first World Cup game.
The Lionesses have a full squad going into the game against Haiti and Wiegman said Bright is “absolutely” ready to go.
“We’re happy,” Wiegman said. “That was the plan. The plan worked and Millie is ready to play.”

GOAL! Women’s World Cup: Switzerland 1-0 Philippines

PENALTY! Women’s World Cup: Switzerland – Philippines 0-0
Four games at the World Cup, four penalties!
This time Switzerland have a goal after Jessika Cowart caught Coumba Sow with a late foul in the penalty area. Was it enough to award the penalty? Not for me.

Women’s World Cup: Switzerland – Philippines 0-0
CHANCE! Switzerland is getting closer. Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic shoots a golden chance over the bar from six yards out after the ball shot low over the goal. Switzerland are beginning to skirt the Philippines side, who remain stubborn.

England decides armbands for Women’s World Cup matches
England captain Millie Bright will wear armbands in the first three World Cup matches for the Lionesses, which champion inclusion, indigenous peoples and gender equality, the FA has confirmed.
Players at this tournament will have the choice to wear one or more of the eight FIFA-approved armbands, but not the rainbow-hued OneLove design, which at the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar faces the risk of sanctions against countries – including England and Wales – triggered.
Should the Lionesses progress beyond the group stage, which starts with Saturday’s opener against Haiti, the player will make the decision to have her captain change her armband for each game.
Bright said: “As a group, all causes were very close to our hearts and we could not separate them. We believe they all matter and deserve our recognition and support.
“We only recently came to a decision as we wanted to take our time to process everything and make sure we were talking together.”

NO GOAL! Women’s World Cup: Switzerland – Philippines 0-0
What a moment for the Philippines! But no! It is denied by the offside flag!
They thought they had the lead against Switzerland when Katrina Guillou caught a long ball, rounded the keeper and shot into the net!
But Guillou went too early and eventually the offside flag was raised.
