A38 closed for serious collision investigation after late night crash – latest updates

The A38 remains closed this morning (Sunday 26 March) due to a serious collision investigation following an accident the previous night.

The road was closed westbound towards Plymouth between Chudleigh and Splatford Split following an accident late Saturday evening (25 March).

According to National Highways, two cars were involved in the accident. One of the cars left the road and drove down an embankment, the road network authority said.

Road surveillance service Inrix issued a warning at 2244 that the carriageway of the westbound A38 at Chudleigh had been closed to all vehicles following an accident involving a car between Harcombe Cross and the B3344 junction to Chudleigh and Kingsteignton.

National Highways: South West issued further information on Twitter at 11:27pm, saying: “The westbound A38 is closed between the A380 at Kennford and the B3344 at Newton Abbot (north). A vehicle left the roadway and drove down an embankment.

Ambulance services including Devon Police, Cornwall Police and Fire and Rescue Services are on site.

Traffic was also halted on the M5 after a crash near Exeter during the night. On the M5, Inrix reported: “All traffic is temporarily halted due to an accident on the northbound M5 between J29 A3015 Honiton Road (Exeter / Honiton) and J28 A373 Honiton Road (Cullompton / Service Area).”

The M5 incident was cleared this morning (Sunday 26 March) at around 00:20. The A38 remains closed.

Two cars were involved in the accident

Updated statement from National Highways:

The A38 is closed westbound between the A380 at Kennford and the B3344 at Newton Abbot (north).

The reason for the closure was a collision between two cars. One of the cars left the road and drove down an embankment.

Ambulance services, including Devon and Cornwall Police, are on site. Delays are likely as we approach this closure, with additional travel times also to be expected on detour routes.

  • Take the B3195 and then the B3193 northbound to rejoin the A38 at Chudleigh Knighton.

The westbound A38 was closed for salvage work and a previous accident involving a car between the A380 (Splatford Split) and the B3344 (Chudleigh/Kingsteignton Turn Off). A car went off the road just after 10pm last night and went down an embankment, disrupting traffic away from Exeter towards Plymouth.

National Highways say: “All lanes are now open on the northbound M5 between J29 and J28 north of Exeter.

“The previous collision + debris cleared. Delays of less than 10 minutes remain on approach.”
