Alta, Brighton among latest Utah ski resorts to break all-time snowfall records

Resorts across Utah have hit new highs this historic season.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Mountains of snow buried a road sign on the Guardsman Pass Road near Brighton ski resort on Thursday 26 January 2023.

Snow just keeps coming in Utah, and more storms are forecast later this week as March draws to a close. Meanwhile, Beehive State’s famous ski resorts continue to break snow records, with some recently extending their seasons.

Here is a list of resorts that broke all records this season. All snow data was compiled Monday using resort websites Ski Utah and SnoCountry.com.

Height: 759 inches

Alta is one of three Utah resorts to make the 700 Club this year, a moniker used when a report eclipses 700 inches of snow in a single season. It hit 500 inches just last month. The previous record there was 748 inches in 1981-82.

Brighton: 778 inches

Another member of the 700 Club this season. Brighton and Alta hit 600 inches earlier this month. Over the weekend, Brighton announced it had surpassed its all-time record.

Cherry Tip: 387 inches

This Richmond resort might not have the numbers of an Alta, Brighton, or Solitude, but it still has a ton of snow all to itself. Operations Director Dustin Hansen said the most snowfall on Cherry Peak in the past eight years was 327 inches.

Deer Valley: 538 inches

This resort broke its record about two weeks ago. The previous record was 484 inches, set in the 2016/17 season.

Park City: 549 inches

The number 549 is the average between the data from Sky Utah and SnoCountry. Just five days ago, the resort eclipsed 500 inches, marking the snowiest season “in 49 years of records,” per a Twitter post from the resort.

Snow Basin: 504 inches

Weber County Resort set a record in the 1981-82 season that is widely considered one of Utah’s best. The previous record at Snowbasin was 475 inches.

Solitude: 703 inches

The 700 Club’s third this season in Utah, a mark reached in the last 24 hours. It has never reached 700 inches per year in recorded history Tweet from the resort.

Elsewhere

Snowbird has racked up 698 inches of snow this season, according to Ski Utah and SnoCountry, although the resort’s official website puts the number at 705 inches. Either way, it should be officially the fourth in the 700 club soon.

But Snowbird has yet to hit its all-time snowfall. That all-time record is 783 inches, according to communications manager Sarah Sherman. This mark was reached in the 2010/11 season. So far this season has been the third snowiest in Snowbird.

Brian Head measures 377 inches tall, said Amber Palmer, the resort’s marketing manager. Ski Utah and SnoCountry reach 366. Still, that’s not a record – yet. Palmer said the resort hasn’t surpassed 400 inches since the 2018-19 season, but there’s a chance it might happen this season.
