Another big win for Coffs sporting community

The athletics community of Coffs Harbor will enjoy new field events facilities at York Street Oval and space for a grass track available for 12 months a year, while Northern Storm Football Club will have changing rooms and storage facilities in an NSW Government investment in $1.1 million upgrade facilities at York Street Oval.

Nationals member for Coffs Harbor Gurmesh Singh and Coffs Harbor City Council Mayor Cr Paul Amos said construction started today to provide upgraded facilities to better serve local sporting needs.

The new athletics facilities will increase the provision for athletics at the local level as a potential site for a regional athletics center is explored by the council. The football facilities will greatly enhance the Northern Storm FC player experience both in training and in competition.

“The York Street Oval project will not only ensure our local sporting community have the facilities they need, but will create approximately 15 jobs in the area during construction,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh said this important project will provide much needed community facilities for our local sports organisations.

“The council is building a magnificent space for grassroots sport by installing long jump pits with synthetic running tracks, discus cages, shot put circles and a storage shed,” Mr Singh said.

“The new facilities will represent a significant improvement for the athletics community, allowing them to operate from one location 12 months a year, while fully accessible locker rooms will encourage inclusive participation for athletes of all skill levels.

“The two new locker rooms and storage facilities at the north end of the oval will benefit the more than 300 members of the football club, as well as the 2,000 guest players who compete in district-level competitions.”

Cr Amos welcomed the start of construction and said it was another exciting addition to the local sports facilities.

“The ability to provide these facilities for the local York Street Athletics Center is a good start as we begin research for the much larger Regional Athletics Centre,” he said.

“It’s great to see both football and athletics benefit from these improvements. Council is also installing an additional toilet block while Northern Storm FC is funding a modular canteen.

“I look forward to seeing these York Street facilities being used by the community of Coffs Harbor and in particular the opportunities they offer our youth to engage in sport and leisure,” said Cr Amos.

The investment for the York Street Oval’s athletics and football facilities will be funded by the NSW Government’s $3 billion Infrastructure and Jobs Accelerator Fund.
