Apple sold the best-selling phone of 2022, the iPhone 13. Apple also sold the second best-selling phone of 2022, the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apple also sold the third, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth, according to new data from research firm Counterpoint best selling phone of the year. And this despite the fact that three of these phones are only available four months a year.

It’s the first time a single brand has clinched eight of the top 10 spots in the best-selling smartphone list, says Counterpoint.

The only other company to crack the top 10 list was Samsung. Samsung’s Galaxy A13 took fourth place, while the Galaxy Ao3 took 10th place.

Counterpoint says market share for these phones will increase in 2023 as Apple, Samsung and other smartphone brands focus on clearing inventory and streamlining product launches.

“For the first time, a Pro Max variant of an iPhone series has achieved more volume than its Pro and base models,” says Counterpoint.

“iPhone 14 Pro Max sales have been led by early adopters and those upgrading to a higher variant of the iPhone. Key advances in the iPhone 14 Pro series, like dynamic island and faster processor, make it more attractive as the base model is almost identical to last year’s model.”

It’s important to note that Apple is only able to clinch so many spots on the top 10 best-selling phones list because it’s the only maker of iPhones dedicated to Android-based smartphones, with a 50% market share in some affluent countries % approaches. while they take just over a quarter of the global market share: 27.6% according to Statista. Additionally, many Android phone makers like Samsung spread their market share across significantly more models, meaning Apple’s overall market share is more concentrated for each iPhone model sold.

Still, it’s a remarkable achievement.

These top 10 phones account for 19% of global sales volume, according to Counterpoint. According to the company, there were around 3,600 different smartphone models for sale worldwide in 2022, up from 4,200 in 2021. It is highly likely that this trend will continue as the smartphone industry continues to mature and consolidate.

About 1.6 billion phones were sold in 2021.
