  • Bayern Munich were linked with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this summer
  • The Portuguese striker has informed Manchester United that he wants to leave
  • But Bayern boss Hasan Salihamidzic said the club’s board voted against a deal
  • The German team sold Robert Lewandowski but has a full attack list

FC Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has announced that the club’s board voted against signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

When the Portuguese striker announced to Manchester United that he wanted to leave Old Trafford in early July, Bayern were quickly seeded as favorites for his next club.

However, the Bundesliga champions soon ruled themselves out of a deal, as did Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.

Salihamidzic has now explained why Bayern decided against a move for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner despite selling Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona.

“If you now see how our attack is equipped – even without Robert Lewandowski – it’s simply difficult from a sporting and financial point of view,” says Salihamidzic in the BILD phrase mower podcast.

“We have eight players for four positions up front. We have established top players who are in the best footballing age. We have talent that we also want to give playing time to, so we all voted to go ahead with our plan.

“So that (signing Ronaldo) was out of the question for us. We are very satisfied with our equipment.”

As Salihamidzic alludes to, Bayern already have a full offensive squad. This summer they added Sadio Mane to star names like Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo remains a United player with just 10 days left before the transfer window closes.

He was dropped by Erik ten Hag for Monday night’s game against Liverpool but the Dutchman reiterated that the 37-year-old can fit into his system.

“I think he can,” said ten Hag after coming on as a substitute for Ronaldo in the 86th minute. “Throughout his career under multiple managers, different styles and systems. He was always performing, so why can’t he do that?

“His age doesn’t matter. If you’re good enough and you’re old and you’re still performing, you’re good enough.”
