Bayern’s sporting director reveals why club board voted against signing Cristiano Ronaldo

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have taken another blow in his desire to leave Manchester United this transfer window as the latest report claims only one club from the UEFA Champions League is interested in signing him . This latest development comes after Bayern Munich reportedly revealed why the board decided against signing the Portugal international, who has one year left on his current contract at Old Trafford.

Bayern Munich’s sporting director reveals why they didn’t sign Ronaldo

In the BILD podcast Phrasen Mäher, Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic revealed why the club decided against signing Cristiano Ronaldo. “When you see how our attack is equipped – even without Robert Lewandowski – it’s just difficult from a sporting and financial point of view,” explained Salihamidzic.

The club’s sporting director added: “We have eight players for four positions up front. We have established top players who are in the prime of footballing age. We have talent that we want to give playtime to, so we all voted to go through with our plan. So signing Ronaldo was out of the question for us. We’re very happy with how we’re equipped.”

The Bundesliga giants have one of the strongest attacking forwards as they have options like Sadio Mane, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane. With such quality players further up the field, Ronaldo was unlikely to have received much playing time even if he had been signed by Bayern. As for the Portugal international’s future, it would be interesting to see whether or not he leaves Old Trafford with just a week left until the end of the summer transfer window.

Ten Hag provides update on Ronaldo’s future

Since the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Manchester United’s new manager, speculation has swirled about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford as the Portugal international is not seen as a player capable of pressing. However, the Dutch manager has denied these rumours.

When asked if the 37-year-old could adapt to his system, Ten Hag replied: “I think he can. Throughout his career, under multiple managers, he has worked in a variety of styles and systems. He’s always played, so why can’t he? For me, his age doesn’t matter. When you’re young you’re good enough, and when you’re old and still performing you’re good enough.”
