Borussia Dortmund have ruled out a move for Manchester United’s wanton Cristiano Ronaldo.

Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl insisted the club would not sign the 37-year-old superstar but acknowledged the speculation had led to “outstanding clicks” on their website.

Although Ronaldo’s arrival would likely boost the digital numbers even further, the Bundesliga giants clearly don’t want his supporters to push their transfer policies.

Ronaldo has been actively pursuing a path out of Old Trafford all summer to play for a club in the Champions League and chase more big trophies towards the end of his career.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was initially linked with moves to Chelsea and Bayern Munich but opportunities have narrowed dramatically since he made his first transfer request.

He told BILD TV: “Cristiano Ronaldo will not switch to Borussia Dortmund. That’s so.

‘The number of clicks was probably excellent, but we’ve done a lot in the past few days to get to the bottom of this rumour.’

Despite their lack of interest, the 42-year-old German praised Ronaldo’s talent, saying: “He’s certainly a fantastic player, a world player.”

After a miserable start to the season, losing 2-1 to Brighton in the opening weekend and losing 4-0 to Brentford last Saturday, Manchester United and Ronaldo host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night.
