Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League table and are in dire need of a refreshing result as they head abroad to start their Champions League knockout rounds.

The Blues travel to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their round of 16 game and the challenge will be difficult. Dortmund is third in the Bundesliga, just three points behind leaders Bayern Munich. They have won and scored seven times in a row since coming back from the World Cup break.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are struggling to find consistency, dropping points at every turn as they are unable to produce a full performance. The biggest problem has been the accumulation of injuries across the squad and while the group is recovering, a number of key players are still missing.

Below are the predicted lineups for both teams based on the latest news leading up to the game.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter will need to prevail against a good friend if he is to secure a much-needed result for the Blues on the return of Champions League play.

Their Bundesliga opponents are coached by Edin Terzic, who completed his coaching badges in the same class as Potter, and the two became friends.

Former Dortmund player Christian Pulisic is also set to reunite with his old club but may have to wait until the second leg as he is currently recovering from injury. Another former Dortmund player, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has been left out of Chelsea’s squad for the remainder of the Champions League.

Moukoko’s injury is likely to be seen Sebastian Haller starting at the beginning after returning from his battle with testicular cancer.

Thomas Meier has just returned from a muscle injury and it’s unclear if he’ll be fit while Mateu Morey misses most of the season due to a knee injury. Gio Reyna started the league game at the weekend with Karim Adeyemi banned for accumulation of yellow cards but the latter should return here.

Chelsea are slowly getting healthier as they overcome their injury crisis in the second half of the season but there is still work to be done.

ReeceJames has returned to action, and a variety of players have returned to training, including Christian Pulisic, Wesley FofanaAnd Mateo Kovacic. A return for Raham Sterling is possible, but he might be better suited to a bench role in his first game after suffering a knee injury.

N’Golo Kante And Denis Zakaria are also close to returning but have not yet finalized their treatment plans while they are goalkeepers Edouard Mendy remains sidelined with a broken finger.
