Canada vs. Finland: Live score, highlights, updates from 2022 World Juniors hockey tournament

After a week of competition, Group A will be crowned winners on Monday night when Canada and Finland meet in their final group match.

Canada goes into the matchup with a win against the Czech Republic on Saturday. Mason McTavish scored twice, Kent Johnson successfully completed Michigan’s goal and Tyson Foerster and Ridly Greig each scored a win to put Canada 3-0-0-0 in Group A.

The Czech Republic took an early lead thanks to a shorthandy goal from Martin Rysavy, beating Canada for the first time in the tournament. But Canada scored five goals in a row to eliminate the Czech Republic.

“It’s just a little bit of adversity and that’s okay in these games,” said Canada forward Brennan Othmann. “I think that builds more character for the important games, elimination games. And it just shows that we’re resilient. It doesn’t matter who we play against, we will keep going.”

Finland will be the toughest opponent Canada has seen so far. The Finns are a point behind Canada in the standings after needing a penalty shoot-out to beat the Czech Republic. The team clinched a 9-3 win over Slovakia on Sunday.

Olen Zellweger tracker

For the Finland game we follow Olen Zellweger. The Canadian defender was phenomenal in the back end for the team, playing top minutes for Dave Cameron’s side.

The Ducks’ 2021 second-round pick has one goal and two assists so far in Edmonton. His +8 rating is the third highest of the tournament, behind only McTavish and Brock Faber of the USA.

One of the most impressive parts of Zellweger’s game is his ability to work the offensive blue line. He takes the puck off the wall, goes over the line and nets a shot which is deflected by Brennan Othmann and nets to open the shot on goal.

1st period

6:40 p.m. – GOAL! After a chance for Finland at one end, Bedard rips a shot over Merilainen’s shoulder. It’s that quick release from Bedard. No traffic, defender played it well, Merilainen was square to Bedard but that shot is something else. 3-0 Canada with less than three minutes in the opening frame.

6:31 p.m. – GOAL! A sensational onslaught from Ridly Greig results in Tyson Foerster putting the puck into the net. Greig charges in and splits the Finnish defense. As he falls, he hits the net and Foerster types in the rebound. Canada capitalize on the power play and are 2-0 up with less than eight minutes to go in the first game.

18:29 — The first power play of the game goes to Canada when Samuel Helelnius is called up to slash.

6:22 p.m. – GOAL! The call stands and it’s a good call for Othmann. He’s been excellent ever since he was promoted to the top. Assists go to Zellweger and Connor Bedard.

18:19 — In Canada’s first shot on goal, Leevi Merilainen misses Olen Zellweger’s shot thanks to a brilliant tip from Brennan Othmann. Officials will check it for a possible high stick but it looks like Othmann’s stick was under the bar.

18:16 — Although Finland is definitely the strongest opponent Canada has had, they are doing themselves a disservice. Canada attempted a series of stretch passes through the neutral zone, which are reinforced and intercepted by Finland’s defenders. Too many turnovers early for the Canadians.

18:14 — Finland has Canada on their heels early. Some turnovers and failed breakouts result in Canada having an extended shift in their zone. Dylan Garand was forced to make some solid stops.

17 o’clock – No lineup changes for Canada. Garand will get his third consecutive start on the net. Brennan Othmann remains at the top alongside Connor Bedard and Mason McTavish.
