The first time they met on September 16, 2017 was a split decision, mired in controversy over who actually won. Unsurprisingly, Alvarez declared a win. They then met again in a match fraught with controversy about what happened before the bell.
In the March leading up to their September fight, Alvarez was not only busted for testing positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol, but it was rained on by Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez, who claimed he cheated in the first fight – who said Alvarez had his Hand bandages worn in an illegal manner.
Alvarez was soon hit with a six-month suspension that was arguably perfectly timed – backdated to his Feb. 17 drug test and ending in August before the fight.
And although Alvarez won that match, he goes into this trilogy finale in a different position. His loss to Dmitry Bivol came as no shock (the Russian boxer entered with a 19-0 unbeaten record), but Alvarez was still considered a favourite.
And here he comes in to settle the only outstanding score: a personal one. Alvarez, who has the advantage in the trilogy, tells the press that he is frustrated with how Golovkin and his people always say something to the press.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez record and cheat sheet
16 years in the professional fighting world has given Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez a record 57-2-2 with 39 KOs. The WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine super middleweight champion didn’t come off his win over Plant with much evidence.
A loss to Dmitry Bivol in 2021 came at light heavyweight. But since this was a loss according to the judges’ scores (unanimously 115-113, by the way), Alvarez had to tell his own story and contradicted the scores. Alvarez opted for the trilogy fight against Gennady Golovkin instead of a rematch with Bivol.
Gennady Golovkin record and cheat sheet
At 40, Gennady Golovkin is an industry titan with a record of 42-1-1. His only loss and tie came in his previous clashes with Alvarez, with a loss in 2018 and a tie in 2017. With that loss in 2018, GGG lost their WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight championships .
Most recently, Golovkin survived an early upset by Ryota Murata in a bout to unify the IBF and WBA middleweight titles in Japan.
