There are dozens of fish and bugs for players to catch around Coral Island. However, they are not immediately available at the beginning of the game. Instead, the player must take a trip to the beach for a quick introduction to Sunny’s Beach Shack.

How to unlock the fishing rod and bug net in coral island
Players who have purchased Coral Island on Steam will quickly settle into island life. This involves completing a series of “main quests”. These quests are key to upgrading houses, making friends, and getting items like the Fishing Rod and Bug Net.
Below are the steps to unlock the Fishing Rod and Bug Net:
- Complete the Departure quest
- Complete the quest “Home sweet home”.
- Look for a letter from Sunny and Eleanor in the mailbox in front of the house
- Walk into town and down to the beach
- Enter Sunny’s Beach Shack
- Go through the short cutscene and dialogue
Be sure to check your mailbox if you don’t see the Fishing Rod or Bug Net in your inventory. They are automatically sent home when a Coral Island player’s bag is full.
How to use the fishing rod in Coral Island
Fishing Rod is surprisingly difficult for those who have played Animal Crossing: New Horizons or Stardew Valley. The first instinct is to start clicking as soon as a bite is at stake. To fish successfully, follow these steps:
- Eject the line by holding down the left mouse button.
- Wait for a bite and then click again.
- Hold the left button to start reeling in the fish.
- Pay attention to the tension of the cord, which is indicated by wavy lines on the retractor bar. Release the left button to decrease the tension.
How to use the bug net in Coral Island
Similarly, players will likely notice within a few game days of playing that the bugs on Coral Island can be startled. Follow these steps to catch bugs with the Bug Net:
- Pick the bug net from the hot bar safely away from the bug.
- Press and hold the left mouse button to activate “Sneak” mode.
- Slowly aim the blue capture target square over the bug.
- Release the mouse button
